Ever find yourself digging for change to feed the meter or feeling hesitant to swipe your card just to park your car?

Councilman Harry Griffin is proposing to eliminate paid parking in downtown Charleston. The councilman believes that free parking could attract more people to the downtown area to promote business.

The Charleston City Council was presented with the proposal in a virtual meeting on Tuesday night. Though the parking proposal was not approved, the topic is set to be revisited + further discussed at a later date.

Mayor Tecklenburg is asking Charlestonians to contact senators, Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott, to ask about the city receiving more state funding to help support projects + ideas such as free parking on the peninsula.

Here’s a list of parking areas and rates. More parking info. + an interactive map can be found on the ParkMe app.

Hours for metered lots are 9 a.m.-6 p.m., excluding Sundays and official city holidays.
