Summer is in full swing and so is the Carolina heat.☀️ And, while most of us enjoy spending our days by the beach, out fishing, or just exploring — it’s important to remember to stay cool + hydrated...that goes for your furry bff as well.

Let you and your pet enjoy fun in the sun by taking these simple tips + precautions for heat safety into consideration:

Pets can get dehydrated fairly quickly. So make sure you keep fresh, clean water handy when it is hot and humid.

Keep your fur-child in the shade, and take them indoors when it is too hot.

Don’t over exercise them in the heat. When temperatures are really hot, don’t let them walk on asphalt/pavement. If it’s too hot your toes, it’s too hot for their paws.

Never leave your pet in a hot car unattended. The temperature inside the vehicle becomes rapidly hotter than the outside. Plus, in many states (not in SC) it is illegal.

Know the signs of heat stroke in your pet and what to do if you suspect they are overheating.

Make sure you keep a close eye on your doggo at barbecues and socially-distanced gatherings to make sure they don’t eat something dangerous. Here is a list of foods pups should not have.

Be sure to rinse your dog after going swimming in a pool, pound, or the ocean. Chlorine and bacteria can cause an irritation or infection on your dog’s skin.

Lastly, keep your dog up-to-date on all veterinarian appointments and vaccines — especially heartworm medication.
