City Editor Lexa here. Many of you know I grew up in Charleston, but you might not know that I was born in Syracuse, New York.
We moved to Charleston when I was two, so this really is home, but I ended up returning to attend Syracuse University for my bachelor’s degree + some of my family still lives in the area.
While I absolutely love everything that Charleston offers, there was just something special about fall in Syracuse. The crisp, cool air, the leaves changing, the fall traditions — I really felt the seasons changing + the significance of new beginnings.

Why go?
- Visit Green Lakes State Park featuring two glacial lakes + 10 miles of trails. It’s a great way to get some fresh air, speaking from experience.
- Check out the fall foliage, which usually starts in September. Take a look at SUNY ESF’s Guide to Fall Colors in Upstate New York.
- Trying to get into the autumn spirit? No problem. There are lots of family-friendly fall festivals to choose from.
- There’s no shortage of pumpkin patches around town, but City Editor Lexa recommends The Pumpkin Hollow . Though she might be a bit biased, given that she grew up going here.
Pro tip: The donuts at Beak and Skiff Apple Orchards are to die for.

Act like a local:
- Food: Feeling Italian food? Make a reservation at Pastabilities — you won’t be disappointed. Want a taste of the Lowcountry? Grab a pulled pork platter from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que . Pro tip: You’ve got to stop by Stella’s Diner at least once for breakfast.
- Drink: Visit the speakeasy lounge Gilded Club . Fill out the form for the access code beforehand.
- Outdoors: Head to Beak and Skiff Apple Orchards for all the fall feels. You’ll want to take the tractor ride out to pick your own apples.
- Coffee: There’s nothing better than a dirty chai latte from Recess Coffee on a crisp day.
- Explore: Take a short drive to Skaneateles + spend some time along the lake. There are plenty of stores to browse and spots to picnic.
- Listen: Catch a live performance at Funk ‘n Waffles while you enjoy your breakfast.
