Howdy Charleston, Vagney here. 👋 You might have noticed a new face at the bottom of the newsletter next to Katie. That’s me. We know there are plenty of new faces who have subscribed to our newsletter as well, so we thought it would be a great time for me to properly introduce myself + have Katie reintroduce herself to all of our newsletter friends.

So who are the people behind CHStoday? Well, the day-to-day work is done by Katie and myself (officially known as co-editors). We take turns writing the email newsletters + sharing what’s happening in Charleston on our social media platforms. All other operations are handled by the rest of the crew at 6AM City.

Meet Vagney

Alright, Alright, Alright, I was born + raised in Houston, TX and earned my degree in journalism from The University of Texas at Austin (Hook ‘Em Horns 🤘).

Before joining the 6AM City team this year as a co-editor for CHStoday, I worked as a TV news producer + reporter, a communications specialist for various media outlets, and a newspaper reporter. Now, I have the pleasure of writing about this cool place we call Charleston, and it’s pretty sweet. 😎

When I’m not getting the latest in news + entertainment around the city, I’m probably at the farmers market in my cowboy boots picking fresh fruits and vegetables, diving into a new book, practicing my spanish + American sign language, or relaxing in my favorite recliner catching up on my favorite tv shows + movies

The last three things I did out in Charleston:

I enjoyed a bike ride around the trail at James Island County Park, shopped at the farmers market, and explored + picked up some tea from the Charleston Tea Garden

Favorite places to grab a bite to eat:

My go-to meal when ordering out would have to be calamari + a side caesar salad (with a side of lemon slices) from the Royal Tern. I also love to use fresh + local produce to create delicious plant-based dishes in the comforts of my kitchen.

Favorite person I’ve met in Charleston:

Ok, this is going to sound weird (it’s not a person…it’s a thing), but I had the opportunity to check-out the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile when it rolled into Charleston, and it was so cool. Literally, everything was hot dog-related in the vehicle. I’m not even a hot dog fan, but it was pretty interesting to see. 🤯

What I love most about living here:

I really enjoy living near the water. It’s so awesome I can choose a different beach to go to almost every weekend, wow! I also love a good water-front view while eating + relaxing

Meet Katie

I was born and raised in Columbia (hello, COLAtoday 👋), but frequently visited Charleston where a lot of my family lives.

I studied English + secondary education at UofSC (go Cocks 🐔), and a week after I graduated I moved to Charleston to begin an internship with CHStoday. I was brought on to the team as a full-time Editor last August, and I now spend my days writing about the city I’ve fallen in love with.

Some of my favorite things to do are read, play the piano, cuddle any and all animals, and eat cheese.

The last three things I did out in Charleston:

Went to Firefly Distillery’s Safe Sounds concert, took my dog for a walk at the new Stono River County Park + had dinner with some friends at Fam’s Brewing Co

Favorite places to grab a bite to eat:

I am obsessed with Boxcar Betty’s (after all, it is home to the “Best Sandwich in SC). Five Loaves Cafe is a great lunch spot, and Fleet Landing + Gabrielle at Hotel Bennett are both delicious and scenic dinner options.

Favorite person I’ve met in Charleston:

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Lou Hammond, who was one of the kindest women I’ve ever met, and Micheal Sparks (the face behind The Underground Kitchen), who is hilarious + a great story-teller.

What I love most about living here:

Okay, unpopular opinion – I never really liked the beach, because I hate sand. But after moving here + adopting a puppy, taking walks on the beach is one of my new favorite pastimes, so I love having plenty of options for that. There’s always new + fun things going on, and I love living in a place that my friends always want to come visit.
