Moultrie Playground celebration: pickleball, dancing + live music

The public is invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Tecklenburg to celebrate the renovation of General William Moultrie Playground near Colonial Lake. Originally scheduled for September, the event has been postponed to Thurs., Oct. 7 due to inclement weather.

The ceremony will be held from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at 41 Ashley Ave. There will be family fun, pickleball, basketball, music by country duo Sally & George, food + dancing. Vendors and participating businesses include Jason’s Jump Castles, Charleston Pops, and Dancefx Charleston.

The project was completed in May 2020 and was carried out by the Charleston Parks Conservancy — a nonprofit dedicated to connecting locals with parks and beautifying public spaces. The organization has helped renovate 20+ parks in the Holy City.

Project highlights:


    • New playground equipment including the “Crab Trap”
    • State-of-the-art rubberized play surface
    • New basketball half-court
    • Pickleball court
    • Lawn space for gatherings
    • New paths and trails for biking and walking
    • Flower gardens and new plantings
    • Area for off-street food truck parking
    • Additional seating and picnic areas

Fundraising was started by a group of neighbors in 2016 after the renovation of Colonial Lake. The Moultrie Playground Renovation Committee raised more than $300,000 for the project. The late Dr. Frederick Reed donated $50,000 for the addition of a pickleball courtthe first outdoor pickleball court on the peninsula.
