Be honest, are you from Charleston?

According to Migration Patterns — using data from the United States Census Bureau53% of Charleston residents were born and raised in the Holy City.

We poked around on the map, which shows where people moved between the ages 16 and 26, and found a few interesting facts:
  • Young transplants: 71% of residents who moved to Charleston by age 16 elected to stay through young adulthood.
    • Approximately 9% stayed in SC, with 3.1% moving to Columbia, 1.7% moving to the Charlotte Metro area on the border of the Carolinas, and 1.4% moving to Greenville.
    • Before age 26, approximately 20% left the state. Top destinations included Atlanta, Washington, DC, New York City, and Jacksonville.

    • Paradise found: 47% of Charleston residents came from outside of the city.
      • Approximately 12% moved from other areas of SC, with 2.9% relocating from Columbia, 2.1% from Greenville, and 1.9% from Florence.
      • Out-of-state relocation accounted for 35%, with the most common areas including Atlanta, Washington, DC, and New York City.

If you’ve been in the Lowcountry long enough, you’re probably familiar with Shades of Charleston.

The locally-owned business has been a one-stop shop for all your lifestyle-based needs, from Ray-Ban sunglasses to Free Fly hats, since it first opened in Mount Pleasant in September 2012.

Well, folks, we’ve got good news. The business has announced that it’s headed for West Ashley across from Captain D’s and Boxcar Betty’s at 1917 Savannah Hwy. Here’s a peek at the upcoming shop.

While an opening date hasnt been announced yet, we’ll keep y’all posted. In the meantime, head to the Mount Pleasant or Sullivans Island locations.

We think it goes without saying, but this is a great small business to check out for your holiday gift needs. Shades has even made it easy with its gift guide. Wink wink.
    THE WRAP
Today’s issue was written by Alexandra.

Editors pick: Any wildlife enthusiasts out there? Growing up, I loved downloading shark tracker apps like the OCEARCH Shark Tracker to see what wildlife was in + around Charleston. I always found it so fascinating and one of the easiest pastimes, especially in the summer.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll be interested to hear that a 9-ft, 578-pound great white shark was pinged off the coast of the Holy City last Friday around 11 a.m., according to global nonprofit OCEARCH.

The shark, Keji, was named after the Kejimkujik National Park + is said to have traveled approximately 7,043 miles in the last 266 days. Peep Keji’s travel log. 🦈 (WCBD)
