New restaurants to try in Charleston, SC

There’s no shortage of new places to eat in town, so we’re dishing out the latest spots that belong on your radar. If you need a recommendation, use this roundup of five new eateries to try this winter in the Lowcountry as a checklist. 🍴

The Quinte Oyster Bar, 36 George St.
  • The Quinte opened in The Pinch Hotel in November 2022 near the College of Charleston. The oyster bar offers eats like stone crab claws, a rotating selection of oysters, and steamed local fish.
Pisco Mar Peruvian Coastal Cuisine, 99 S. Market St.
  • Charlestons first Peruvian chefs table opened upstairs at Port of Call Food + Brew Hall in November 2022. Dig into eight courses of coastal cuisine and sip on pisco-centric cocktails.
Cafecito, 471 King St.
  • Opening in September 2022, this Cuban cafe on King Street serves up pressed sandwiches, coffee classics including café con leche, and sweets like stuffed pastries.
Ruby’s New York Style Bagels, 280 W. Coleman Blvd., Mount Pleasant
  • Head to Mount Pleasant to dig into more than 20 flavors of New York-style bagels and 18 flavors of cream cheese at Ruby’s, which opened in October 2022.
Iron Rose Bar & Restaurant, 115 Meeting St.
  • The Mills House Hotels new signature restaurant opened in October 2022 featuring a bar and courtyard seating. Find dishes like flat iron steak and grilled swordfish on the menu.

  • Earlier this week, the City of Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review reviewed proposed plans for a senior living facility at 609 King St., which is currently occupied by an art deco-style building. The proposed facility is seven stories. (WCSC)
  • Plans have been paused for a new hotel on Spring Street. The City of Charleston has decided to take another look at the plans over concerns about the hotels design. Visit the city’s agenda center to view plans and renderings of the six-floor hotel from this week’s meeting. 🏨 (WCSC)

  • Planet Fitness held an official grand opening ceremony yesterday, Dec. 15, for its new location off Folly Road on James Island. The location opened last month at 860 Folly Rd. Get details on the gym before you start your New Year’s resolution. 🏋️
  • It’s the grand opening weekend of Central Creek Park in Goose Creek, Berkeley Countys first all-inclusive park. The park will open to the public at 5 p.m. this evening with celebrations going on through tomorrow afternoon. Head to 147 Old Moncks Corner Rd. for train rides, food trucks, lawn games, and a showing of The Polar Express.”

  • A special election on short-term rental properties on Folly Beach is in the works and could be held as early as February 2023 following a citizen petition. Permanent residents of the island who are registered to vote can participate in the election, which concerns the number of investment short-term rentals that can be on Folly Beach at one time. 🏘️ (WCSC)
Closing
  • A local Italian restaurant is closing its doors. The Red Pepper, located at 709 N. Main St., will close after 21 years of serving Summerville with its last day of business on Christmas Eve. The business is now on the market, listed for $895,000. (The Post and Courier)
Biz
  • Ten local small businesses and their employees will be chosen to receive three months of free healthcare from NasonCare. To qualify, businesses must be located in the Tri-County area and have 10 or fewer employees. Register a business by Saturday, Dec. 31. (WCSC)
  • Hudson Automotive Group, a locally-based auto dealer, now has a total of 48 locations after recently acquiring nine stores in NC. The new locations include the company’s first BMW and Volvo stores. 🚗 (The Post and Courier)
  • Calling all SC companies. Register to participate in the annual Best Places to Work in South Carolina program. Winners will gather to celebrate their accomplishments at a party on August 10, 2023, and will be honored in special editions of SC Biz News publications. Check out eligibility requirements.

  • Harper Woodlee, a seventh grader at Charleston School of the Arts, is hosting a Holiday Puppy Parade fundraiser this Saturday, Dec. 17 at 3 p.m. at Alhambra Hall and ending at James B. Edwards dog park in Mount Pleasant. The fundraiser is for Water Mission, a nonprofit that helps bring clean water to people in need. The event is free with a suggested $10 donation. 🐕
