We’re spotlighting 10 Charleston theaters

We’re putting Charleston’s lively performing arts scene in the spotlight. Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, here are 10 theaters and performance venues around town, plus shows to mark on your calendar. Heads up: This isn’t a comprehensive list.

34 West | 200 Meeting St. #100 | Shows are written by 34 Wests own actors and designers. Check out plays like “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “I’m Still Standing.”

Dock Street Theatre | 135 Church St. | Known as “America’s first theater,” Dock Street is home to Charleston Stage performances including “JFK and Inga Binga.”

Black Fedora Comedy Mystery Theatre | 164 Church St. | Charleston’s only live comedy mystery theatre presents productions like “Sherlock’s Other Brother by a Southern Mother.”

Sottile Theatre | 44 George St. | CofC’s theater has reopened after a major renovation project. Get dressed up for Charleston Opera Theater’s “Grande Serenata.”

Theatre 99 | 280 Meeting St. | This improv comedy hub offers shows including “Laughway to the Weekend” and “Take the Funny and Run” weekly.

Charleston Gaillard Center | 95 Calhoun St. | The center was named after a previous mayor of Charleston and hosts Broadway musicals such as “Jagged Little Pill.”

Queen Street Playhouse | 20 Queen St. | Home of the Footlight Players, this is the city’s original theatre company. Catch shows including “The Mountaintop.”

James F. Dean Theatre | 133 S. Main St., Summerville | See the Flowertown Players perform at this historic theater and experience musicals like “Boundless.”

Holy City Magic | 49 1/2 John St. | See where the magic happens with performances by magicians including Howard Blackwell and Gogo Cuerva.

PURE Theatre | 134 Cannon St. | This professional regional theater features diverse artists and audiences. Experience the world premiere of “Septima.”

  • Your Parks, Your Classroom: Scales and Tails | Wednesday, Feb. 15 | 10-11 a.m. | Virtual | Free | View reptiles at the Caw Caw Interpretive Center in this virtual education series — registration closes the day before the program at 4 p.m.
  • Adult Crafternoons - Cheese Boards for One | Wednesday, Feb. 15 | 1:30 p.m. | Cynthia Graham Hurd St. Andrews Library, 1735 N. Woodmere Dr., Charleston | Free | Register to learn how to assemble a charcuterie display.
  • Black Women’s History as American History | Wednesday, Feb. 15 | 5:30-7 p.m. | Education Center, Room 118, 25 St. Philip St., Charleston | Free | Join the Department of History for its annual Black History Month lecture.
Thursday, Feb. 16
  • Paint & Sip: Love Birds | Thursday, Feb. 16 | 6-8 p.m. | Estuary Beans & Barley, 3538 Meeks Farm Rd., Johns Island | $37 | Get step-by-step instructions for creating your own work of art and receive $1 off every pint.
Friday, Feb. 17
  • Art Walk | Friday, Feb. 17 | 4-7 p.m. | Freshfields Village, 165 Village Green Ln., Kiawah Island | Free | Watch live art demonstrations, view works from local and visiting artists, and enjoy live jazz music while you stroll.

  • A new hotel is headed for the peninsula. Moxy Charleston Downtown will open on Meeting Street around the corner from Bar Rollins. The hotel is holding a hiring event tomorrow, Feb. 15, at Tradesman Brewing from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 🏨
  • Bearcat, a neighborhood eatery serving modern American food, plans to open next month across from Triangle Char & Bar in West Ashley. Reservations open Wednesday, March 1. Check out this sneak peek of the upcoming spot on Instagram. 🍽️
  • Malika Canteen, SC’s first-ever Pakistani restaurant, will open its doors on Tuesday, March 7 on James Island. Head to The Pour House container walk-up kitchen for classics like the Masala fries and the new buttery naan bites.

  • Towing enforcement of King Street parking rules began last Thursday. As part of the King Street Safety Plan, street parking is prohibited from Thursday-Saturday on King Street between Spring and John streets from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. 🚘 (WCIV)
Development
  • A county project is underway on James Island to build a 6-ft-wide sidewalk along Camp Road and a 10-ft-wide multi-use path along Riverland Drive. The project, funded by federal grants and state gas taxes, is set to continue through September. Learn more. 🚶

Biz
  • Historic Charleston Foundation has purchased an old gas station downtown for $900,000. The vacant property is located by the corner of Ashley Avenue and Wentworth Street. No official plans are in the works, but stay tuned. (The Post and Courier)

Next time you’re at the airport, stop by Verde On The Go on your way to Concourse B. Part of Charleston International Airport’s Kiosk Specialty Program, Verde serves up fresh, healthy eats to enjoy before you board.

Choose from options like seasonal salads and wraps featuring fresh-from-the-farm produce and grab-and-go snacks. The kiosk is located just past Central Marketplace next to Cinnabon and is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
