Yesterday, Mayor Tecklenburg and federal, state, county, and city officials broke ground on the Ashley River Crossing project. This standalone bridge + bike path will provide a connection for pedestrians and bicyclists traveling from West Ashley to the Charleston peninsula.
The project is focused on:
Safety — The bridge will provide a space dedicated to safe travel for bikers + walkers.
Sustainability — In 30 years, the project is expected to save ~66,210,000 vehicle miles.
Accessibility — DYK, nearly half of the city’s population lives in West Ashley? This bridge will increase access to the peninsula.
After completion, the bridge will connect to the 8.5-mile West Ashley Greenway and serve as a missing link for the East Coast Greenway that connects Florida to Maine.
The bridge will also provide intersection improvements on Lockwood Boulevard, the Greenway at Folly Road Boulevard and Wesley Drive, and Wappoo Road.
This project will cost ~$74 million and has an estimated completion time of three years.

Do you speak French? Many in Charleston do, it turns out. That’s because it’s the most spoken language after English and Spanish both in Charleston and throughout South Carolina. Might be a good time to brush up on your French.
