Every February, the US observes the history, struggles, achievements, and contributions of generations of Black Americans. Here are a few ways to honor Black history this month in Charleston, from art to food to community discussions.
Bulldog Tours will celebrate Black History Month by offering this tour for a discounted rate each Saturday at 10 a.m. in February. The two-hour tour starts from Liberty Square on Concord Street. Ticket prices are $10.
This tour takes you along the journey to the International African American Museum exploring Black history from Chattel slavery to the current day. Ticket prices are $35.
On Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Nathaniel Russell House, indulge in Jollof rice, red rice, and even rice desserts that celebrate the rich history of the grain. Attendees can enjoy the plates along with other side dishes and a curated cocktail menu by The Cocktail Bandits. Ticket prices are $100.

The Town of Mount Pleasant will host free and family-friendly events for Black History Month every Saturday. The rest of the month will include a concert featuring traditional Gullah spirituals, a presentation on sweetgrass basket making, special storytelling, and a community panel discussion.
Beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 6, through Saturday, Feb. 10, the Colour of Music Festival will have a Black History Month concert series, including classical and orchestral sounds and Harlem Renaissance-inspired music. Ticket prices range from $16.50 - $27.50.
On Friday, Feb. 9, at the Charleston Music Hall, attendees will travel through six decades of music of Black artists. Pro tip: Dressing like your favorite decade is encouraged. Ticket prices range from $20-$22.

Paint your Angel - Intuitive Art Class | Tuesday, Feb. 6 | 6:30-8:30 p.m. | Striped Pig Distillery, 2225 Old School Dr., North Charleston | $45 | Join for an evening of creativity, attendees will tap into their intuition and express themselves through art.
Did you hear?Palmira BBQ opened last weekend at 2366 Ashley River Rd. Its pitmaster, Hector Garate, pulls flavors and techniques from Texas, the Carolinas, and his roots, Puerto Rico. The current operating hours are Thursday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Festival
The 2024 Charleston Winter Wine Festival has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 24, from 1 until 5 p.m. It’s now taking place at the Charleston Harbor Cruise Terminal. Get the details.
Legacy
Mark Phoenix, also known as “Big Daddy,” owner of Big Daddy’s Pork Skins, passed away last week at the age of 63. Phoenix started the local pork skins company over a decade ago at the Summerville Farmers Market and would be seen selling various pork skins and cracklins at different markets and events around Charleston. “Untitled Places” is an upcoming exhibition at City Gallery from Friday, March 1 through Sunday, May 5, showcasing landscapes by photographer Nigel Parry.
