Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is next week (Feb. 13), and this celebration is filled with beads, masks, and delicious food. Check out where to celebrate in Charleston.

Mardi Gras Masquerade | Friday, Feb. 9 | 9 p.m. | Bay Street Biergarten, 549 E. Bay St.

Come dressed in your Mardi Gras best and dance the night away with music from DJ Jerry Feels Good at this free carnival. Pro tip: There will be drink specials and a costume contest.

Paw-Di-Gras | Friday, Feb. 9 | 4-7 p.m. | New Realm Brewing, 880 Island Park Dr.

This Mardi Gras-themed pet adoption will have Debbie Fisher Realty + Pet Helpers onsite with adoptable puppies. Michael’s Barkery will also be there.

Princess Tea with New Orleans Princess | Sunday, Feb. 11 | Hotel Bennett, 404 King St., Charleston

Experience afternoon tea service with a Mardi Gras flair. Stop by Hotel Bennett and see the bayou’s very own Princess Tiana. Seating times are 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., 2-4 p.m., and 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Enjoy an evening of live music featuring Mike Quinn and Friend play the Meters on the main stage and Ward’s 9th Brass Band on the deck stage.

Visit historic Downtown Summerville, which turns into a special marketplace with local entertainment and vendors — next week’s theme is Mardi Gras. There will be cajun food and live New Orlean tunes played by the Summerville Orchestra.

  • Starting Friday, Feb. 9, Sorelle will host “Wood Fired Fridays” weekly. Chef Nick Dugan and his team will offer a limited round of Neapolitan-style pizzas at 9 p.m. until it is sold out. Guests can pair it with sips at the bar and lounge area on the first floor. Walk-ins are welcome.

The Charleston Museum at 360 Meeting St. will host events for visitors of all ages to celebrate the season of love.

Valentine’s Day Candle Making Workshop | Saturday, Feb. 10

From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the museum will welcome local artist Daisy McClellan for an environmentally friendly candle-making class using vintage vessels. Think Valentine-themed glares, teacups, and tins from McClellan’s collection.

Valentine’s Day Family Fun Event | Sunday, Feb. 11

From 1-3 p.m., guests are invited to the Education Classroom to make valentines for their loved ones. Think craft tissue paper flowers, poems, and flamingos out of hearts.

Galentine’s Day Floral Bouquet Workshop | Tuesday, Feb. 13

From 6 until 8 p.m., celebrate Galentine’s Day with a workshop led by local floral designer and Master Certified Florist Pia Geraghty. Attendees will learn to express emotion through floral design and about how botanicals were used as a language of love during the Victorian era.

I have fond memories of watching the airshows at the Joint Base Charleston as a kid and wanted to fly one of the aircraft. Although I no longer have aviation aspirations, I would still enjoy watching the upcoming show.
