Calling all bookworms: The countdown is on for the 2024 Charleston Literary Festival, returning to the Holy City next month.

The 10-day event kicks off on Friday., Nov. 1, and runs until Sunday., Nov. 10. Here’s what to expect this year.

What’s it all about?


Held annually, the Charleston Literary Festival features a variety of speakers, including Pulitzer, Booker, and Nobel Prize winners at various venues throughout the city to engage in conversations, meet readers, and sign novels. Attendees can also contribute their thoughts and ideas in this setting.

The history


Beginning in 2017 + modeled after a literary festival in Sussex, England, the concept of the Charleston Literary Festival started with a collaboration between the Charleston Library Society and the Charleston Trust in the U.K.

Today, it has grown to explore relevant issues through conversations with novelists, journalists, historians, scientists, poets, biographers + performers.

Events + speakers


This festival features a scheduled lineup of various speakers and events. Here’s a glimpse at a few programs:

📚 Opening Party - A Black and White Masked Literary Feast | Friday, Nov. 1 | 8 p.m. | Festival Hall | Enjoy this kickoff by welcoming the authors to Charleston and celebrate the guest of honor, Artistic Director Diana Reich.
📚Claire Messud with Georgina Godwin: This Strange Eventful History | Saturday, Nov. 2 | 4-5 p.m. | Dock Street Theatre | Hear from this nominee for the 2024 Booker Prize. Messud will discuss her work and insights into contemporary literature.
📚 A Conversation with Nikki Giovanni | Monday, Nov. 4 | 12-1 p.m. | Dock Street Theatre | Giovanni will be in conversation with Dr. Tonya Matthews, CEO of IAAM. Giovanni has been awarded seven NAACP awards, a Grammy nomination, and was a finalist for the National Book Award.

  • 4th Annual Pumpkin Carving Competition | 12-8 p.m. | Coterie | $10 | Grab a pal for a day of pumpkin carving, seasonal drink specials, and food from Oyster Dumpling Bar.
  • Oktoberfest Street Fair | 1-8 p.m. | Bodega | Free | This street fair will have food, drinks, and entertainment with MC4D headlining.
  • Bourbon Mixology 102 | 3-5 p.m. | Striped Pig Distillery, North Charleston | $55 | You’ll also have the chance to sample different bourbons and experiment with creating your own signature drinks.
Sunday, Oct. 20
  • Hatha & Hops Yoga | Sunday, Oct. 20 | 11-11:45 a.m. | Two Blokes Brewing, Mount Pleasant | $12+ | Bend and breathe at this weekly class for yogis of all ages, including kids; bring your own mat.
  • Children’s Day Festival 2024 | 12 p.m. | Park West Recreation Fields, Mount Pleasant | Free | Families can enjoy carnival rides, giant inflatable slides, and live entertainment.

  • Oyster Candle Company announced its last day of business for its Mount Pleasant location on Scott Street will be Monday, Oct. 28, due to increased rent costs. The store will relocate to Coleman Boulevard in early November. Stop by the Scott Street location to take advantage of merchandise deals.
Seasonal
  • Get your ghoul on with some boo-ze and scary bites. Many Lowcountry bars, restaurants, and coffee shops are brewing up Halloween fun, including The Co-Op downtown’s “A Nightmare on Cannon Street” and Prohibition’s “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.” Check out more spooky pop-ups around town.   • The Big Bounce America, the world’s largest inflatable event, comes to Charleston from today, Oct. 18 through Oct. 20 at Woodlands Nature Reserve. Highlights include the expanded 24,000-sqf World’s Largest Bounce House, a more than 900ft obstacle course, and the new OctoBlast foam party. Tickets start at $22.

  • Charleston County School District has opened the International Welcome Center at Pinehurst Elementary in North Charleston to support international students and their families. Resources include assistance with documents, navigating the bus system, and access to dental and medical help. Donations are also being accepted. (WCIV)

  • The Post and Courier recently featured Charleston Senior Executive Pastry Chef Fabrice Benezit, highlighting the buzz surrounding his Instagram. Benezit, who oversees the dessert programs at The Charleston Place and Sorelle, shares pastry pictures and videos with his ~150,000 followers.

  • The 41st annual Lowcountry Oyster Festival will be Sunday, Feb. 2 at Boone Hall. Festival attendees can enjoy over 45,000 pounds of steam oysters plus entertainment, oyster shucking and eating contests, drinks, a food court, and a children’s area.

  • Take a road trip to Ridgeville to see “The Wall That Heals,” a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. on display at the Dorchester Heritage Center from Oct. 18 to Sunday, Oct. 20. The memorial includes additional exhibits like Hometown Heroes. (Charleston City Paper)
