All these years later, and August still gives me that back to school feeling.
Erin here, and I had the pleasure of attending CofC for my undergrad (2010) and graduate (2016) degrees. In my years living in Charleston, it came to feel more like my hometown than any of the other cities I grew up in.

A walk through the campus still makes my heart pitter-pat. And one of the things I loved most as a student was how integrated the College was with the city. Here are a just a few of the fall semester events worth knowing about.
Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap begins at the Emmett Robinson Theatre Friday, Sept. 26. You can subscribe for season tickets to eight productions this year.
Nov. 14-16. is Fall Alumni Weekend. The lineup includes an annual oyster roast in Cistern Yard + this year’s homecoming game.

Closing
Charleston Grill — a longtime staple of the Charleston Place Hotel — will close on Saturday, Aug. 23, after 36 years in business. Beemok Hospitality Group expects to replace the restaurant as part of a multi-million dollar renovation of the hotel. (News 2)

Applications open at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 11 for Charleston County’s Contribution Program — which provides financial support and up to three rounds of funding investments totally up to $10,000 for local nonprofits. (WCSC)

Johns Island students will start the new school year with a brand new elementary school. Curriculums will follow a STEAM model, under the leadership of Principal Judith Condon (formerly at Angel Oak Elementary). Let’s go River Otters — the mascot for Johns Island Elementary School was chosen from community and student input over the past year. (WCSC)
History
The AP recently profiled members of the St. Helena Island, SC’s largest Gullah community. Read more about the Voices of Gullah + their work preserving history through song.

$3.5 million. That was the cost of a recent yearlong renovation of the Shem Creek shrimp dock and processing facility in Mount Pleasant. Upgrades include structural improvements and a new electrical system. A ribbon cutting will be held Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 9:30 a.m. (ABC 4)

Yesterday, an Oregon-based drive-thru coffee chain opened its first SC location in Summerville. Dutch Bros is known for its exclusive Rebel energy drink + also serves specialty coffees, cold brew, and smoothies. (News 2)
