Restaurant Week South Carolina starts today. For the next 11 days, 50+ Charleston restaurants are taking part, each offering special deals to bring locals through the door.

Here are some we’ve got our eye on:

167 Raw Oyster Bar

Caution if you’re bringing little ones: this place is not named after the viral internet trend. But with three courses for $45, including oysters, it’s definitely worth the risk.

Hall’s Chophouse

If you’ve been waiting for an excuse to go to Hall’s, here it is. A three-course meal for $70 has an entree choice between filet mignon and blackened Scottish salmon.

Shokudô

This recently opened spot is taking Charleston by storm. Book a table to ensure you get to experience a quartet of flavorful Japanese dishes for $50.

News Notes

Opening

Ben & Jerry’s is returning to the Isle of Palms with a new store opening this spring. The community’s previous location on Ocean Boulevard closed down in 2022, but locals and beach-goers can prepare their sweet teeth once again. Patrick here — I recommend the Phish Food flavor. (Post and Courier)

State

The average electric bill in South Carolina could go up nearly $20 per month starting in July. That’s because Dominion Energy wants to generate an additional $322 million in annual revenue to help with system upgrades and offset damage caused by Hurricane Helene, per company officials. Financial assistance is available. (WCIV)

Community

Collaborative groups in North Charleston are planning to build new recreation fields in the Chicora neighborhood. The city has already contributed $1.25 million, and the other organizations involved are trying to raise the remaining $3.25 million for a baseball field, a softball field, and an open-air training space. (Post and Courier)

Health

Flu season is well and truly upon us with hundreds of cases reported across the Lowcountry. There are plenty of ways to reduce your risk of getting sick — Holy City Med rounded up a few easy ideas. (WCBD)
It looks like all the Conformity Gate conspiracy theories that have been flooding the internet, thanks to “Stranger Things” fans, are false. It’s okay if you still believe. For those who don’t want to let the story of 1980s Hawkins end, grab some vintage threads to bring it to life. (Variety)

Arts

In the new year, lots of people set the goal of making more friends and meeting like-minded people. For the artsy folks, the North Charleston Artist Guild is hosting a free art supply swap on Thursday, Jan. 22 at Park Circle Community Building.

On This Day

Today, Jan. 8 is the birthday of two late music icons: Elvis Presley and David Bowie. It’s Shirely Bassey’s 89th birthday, too. You can honor their legacies by catching a show at one of the Lowcountry’s fabulous live music venues.

Welcome to the world, friends. | Post by @scgamewardens and @scdnr

“If you look for it, I have a sneaky feeling, that you’ll find that love, actually, is all around.”

Hugh Grant’s timeless words ring true when heroic acts of unbridled altruism take place. Local officials recently rescued a bale of baby turtles that were incubating in threateningly cold water, protecting them from danger, and giving them a chance to share our planet.
