Every February, the US observes Black History Month. From art and music to food and historical tours, here are some ways to celebrate in Charleston this year.
Educational tours
Gullah Tour
Discover the rich culture and history shaped by Black Charlestonians. Led by local guides, these tours highlight stories and landmarks significant to the Gullah community.
Charleston’s African American History + Heritage Tour
Bulldog Tours is offering this special tour exclusively during Black History Month. The two-hour guided experience begins at Liberty Square on Concord Street and explores Charleston’s African American history from the past to the present.
Black History Month at Park Circle
North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department will offer a variety of events at the Park Circle Community Building, including performances and workshops
The hotel’s property will feature 3.61 acres of green space.
Town of Mount Pleasant Design Review Board
Development
Plans for a new 300-room Mount Pleasant hotel are moving forward. The town approved the design for Bennett Hospitality’s Grand Patriot Hotel. The six-story hotel will include a 3,600-sqft ballroom, bars and restaurants, and a pool. Next up: technical reviews before permits are issued.
Festival
Rain, rain go away. The Sand +Sea Festival has been rescheduled to Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 1 to avoid the forecasted rain. The family-friendly event will feature 85+ vendors, live music, surfboard painting, kids’ activities, and the Sand Sculpting Competition.
Announced
We spoke too soon. Harlow + Pearl, a viral local coffee shop, announced that its residency at the Pinnacle building at Morrison Yard is no longer happening.Head to the comments of their post and let them know where you’d like to see them pop up next.
Eat
Belle Hall in Mount Pleasant is now home to Paris Baguette. The spot offers cake, pastries, sandwiches, salads, and drinks that are too pretty to eat, but we’ll give them a try anyway. Take a look at some of the stunning menu items.
Opening
Get ready to bust a move. The Drop In, a local movement studio known for its music-driven workout classes, opens tomorrow, Feb. 21. The two-story, 2,700-sqft space is located at 1118 King St. and offers mat, dance, and cycle-based classes.
Real Estate
A taste of “Wuthering Heights” awaits at a rain-swept private island for sale in the UK. Once owned by the royal family, Ynys Gifftan has no electricity. That won’t be a problem at this recently listed Daniel Island home, fit with Southern charm and an elegant courtyard. (The Times)

Know someone looking for a job? Kiawah Island Golf Resort is hosting several on-site job fairs. Attendees will be eligible for sign-on bonuses: $100 for part-time and seasonal positions and $250 for full-time roles. The next event is at Mingo Point on Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 1 to 6 p.m.
