Portion of bikeway system map | Map by Design Division, city’s in-house design studio

Have you heard of the city’s People Pedal Plan? It’s a new vision for a strong urban bikeway system on the Charleston peninsula.

What’s the issue? It comes down to recognizing that most streets are safe, but navigating across the city requires movement on or across faster, more dangerous streets.

The urban bikeway system will include improvements such as speed humps, curb extensions + diverters, signage, greenways and side paths, a bike boulevard, bike lanes, and separated cycle tracks.

The plan’s key points include allowing for improved traffic flow, not requiring the movement of curbs, only roads wide enough to support a bike lane, and “unlocking” currently isolated grids of safe streets to make them accessible through the bikeways.
