Picture this: an entire farm centrally located in the heart of downtown Charleston. With the creation of the Urban Farm at Enston Home, that vision will soon be a reality.

Where is it going?: The Urban Farm is being constructed at the William Enston Home – a historic property at the intersection of King and Huger streets that’s used as affordable housing. What’s cool about this location: In his will, William Enston himself requested that a garden be available for residents. This farm will serve as just that.

Who’s building it?: The project is being made possible through a partnership between the Charleston Housing Authority + local nonprofit The Green Heart Project. The groups are hoping to raise $2.1 million in community support to fund the project. So far, about half of that amount has been raised.

What will it provide?: The farm will provide education opportunities (like farm-to-school learning + internships); access to fresh, healthy food for neighbors (produce will be donated to nearby schools and sold at affordable prices to residents); and community building opportunities for people living on the Upper Peninsula (through public events + volunteering).
