It’s time for a deep conversation. The Charleston Harbor Deepening Project is complete + the harbor is now deepest on the East Coast.

Yesterday, Dec. 5, Governor McMaster joined SC Ports to recognize the completion of the project — which brought the harbor from 45 feet deep to 52 feet deep.

Funding for this $500+ million project came from a combination of state and federal dollars. Construction on the project began in 2018.

The new depth allows large container ships to utilize the Port of Charleston at any tide, increasing SC’s connection to global markets.
