So what’s a makerspace?
- The term is often tied to spaces where people with a common interest, often technology, can get together to share ideas + equipment
- Makerspaces typically have a creative component, like a 3D printer or photo processing lab.
- Some are open to the public, while others might have a membership process or are exclusive to a particular group.
- Most importantly, Charleston artists + makers are often closely aligned and work out of the same areas.
Here are four local spaces offering everything from craft supplies to 3D printers:
The Circle Charleston | Email to inquire | This creative coworking space began as a niche for women in the building industry. Now, it is a center for all professionals across the interior design, architecture + building industries to come together to create, collaborate and construct. Redux Contemporary Art Center | 1056 King St. | This art studio + makerspace is a hub for Charleston artists. Members have 24-hour access to the facility that includes a darkroom + print studio, tools, equipment + more. Artists can apply for a space here . Redux also hosts various classes + workshops available to the public.
Reforge Charleston | Citadel Mall, 2070 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. | This education-based nonprofit allows the community to utilize tools, equipment + classes that promote Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) learning + creation. See membership pricing here .
Wando Mount Pleasant Library’s Makerspace and Creative Studios

| This Charleston County Public Library space is free for anyone with a library card
. One studio serves as a classroom for arts + crafts while the other has various equipment like sewing machines, 3D printers, craft supplies + more.
