The largest home sale in the Charleston area happened last week on June 24. The historic Vanderhorst Mansion on Kiawah Island sold for a record-breaking $20.5 milliondethroning the previous top sale of $20.25 million. The home was listed for $21 million in March.

The estate was built in 1803 at 99 Governor’s Drive as one of the original homes on the island. The mansion was created by General Arnoldus Vanderhorst — former mayor of Charleston + governor of SC. The 4-story property is 6,816 sq ft. and spans over 16 acres of ancient live oaks + marshlands.

The mansion underwent extensive renovations in the 1990s after falling into disrepair. Today, there are 6 beds + 6.5 baths and a pool between the house and Kiawah River. The original front entrance is now the rear entrance.

The previous owners were members of the Darby family. The family is associated with The Beach Co. — a major local real estate development firm. The purchaser and newest owner of Vanderhorst Mansion has decided to remain anonymous.
