The public is invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Tecklenburg to celebrate the renovation of General William Moultrie Playground near Colonial Lake. Originally scheduled for September, the event has been postponed to Thurs., Oct. 7 due to inclement weather.
The ceremony will be held from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at 41 Ashley Ave. There will be family fun, pickleball, basketball, music by country duo Sally & George, food + dancing. Vendors and participating businesses include Jason’s Jump Castles, Charleston Pops, and Dancefx Charleston.
The project was completed in May 2020 and was carried out by the Charleston Parks Conservancy — a nonprofit dedicated to connecting locals with parks and beautifying public spaces. The organization has helped renovate 20+ parks in the Holy City.
Project highlights:
- New playground equipment including the “Crab Trap”
- State-of-the-art rubberized play surface
- New basketball half-court
- Pickleball court
- Lawn space for gatherings
- New paths and trails for biking and walking
- Flower gardens and new plantings

Fundraising was started by a group of neighbors in 2016 after the renovation of Colonial Lake. The Moultrie Playground Renovation Committee raised more than $300,000 for the project. The late Dr. Frederick Reed donated $50,000 for the addition of a pickleball court — the first outdoor pickleball court on the peninsula.
Donations are still being accepted for playground maintenance — donate here. If interested, volunteer with the Charleston Parks Conservancy.
