We’re a little over two weeks away from Halloween — but Charleston starts the party in advance when celebrating this fun and festive holiday. Today, we’re sharing seven activities for you to carve out and enjoy.
Halloween pop-up bar
Handcraft Kitchen & Cocktails | 735 Coleman Blvd., Mt. Pleasant | This pop-up bar runs through Halloween and is fit for all ghosts and ghouls. Brave souls can enjoy themed decor and a menu with fun drinks like Witches Brew and Spider in the Spritz.
Haunted experience
Xscream Scapes | 2340 Air Park Rd., North Charleston | This new interactive attraction is open every Friday and Saturday until Saturday, Nov. 4. Thrill seekers must navigate secret passageways and challenges to find Dr. Wells, an eccentric genius who was last seen testing his time machine. Tickets are $36 after 6 p.m. and $30 before. Not recommended for children under 12.
Halloween celebrations
Retro at the Ryder| Little Palm Bar, 237 Meeting St., Charleston | This hotel bar is hosting an 1980s-themed Halloween bash with a costume contest on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 8 p.m. The celebration includes South Beach-inspired vintage cocktails and specialty dishes. Prizes include overnight stays at the Ryder Hotel + gift certificates to Little Palm Bar.
Hallowsfest: Biergarten’s Fall Festival | Bay Street Biergarten, 549 E. Bay St., Charleston | On Saturday, Oct. 28, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., this event is family and dog-friendly and will have a petting zoo, jump castle, pumpkin painting and carving, and live music. Don’t forget to come dressed in your Halloween costume.

Through Tuesday, Oct. 31, SOL Southwest Kitchen and Tequila Bar will raise money to benefit SOS Lowcountry. $1 from each purchase of SOL’s Be Brave Margarita, Miracle Mojito, Have Faith Lemonade, and Think Pink Cooler will be donated to support breast cancer patients.

Marlowe Summerville, a 278-unit rental home complex, has started construction on N. Main Street and College Park in Summerville. The community will have a clubhouse with a fitness center, coworking options, pickleball courts, and a dog park. (Charleston Regional Business Journal)

Ghost tours at the historic Old City Jail on Magazine Street will return later this month after being closed for two years of renovations. The upgrades include a new heating + cooling system, updated restrooms, and new visuals. Register starting Friday, Oct. 20. (WCBD)
Legacy
Mark Cummins, the restaurateur behind Charleston favorites like TBonz, Pearlz Oyster Bar, and Kaminsky’s Dessert Cafe died last week on Thursday, Oct. 5 after a battle with sarcoma. He was 66 years old. (The Post and Courier)

2024 North Charleston Arts Fest poster design competition is open

The City of North Charleston encourages local visual artists to participate in the 41st annual North Charleston Arts Fest Poster Design Competition.
Artists may enter works of fiber and printmaking, acrylic, oil, drawing, pastels, watercolor, and 2-D mixed media.
The winning piece will:
Be the official poster for the 2024 North Charleston Arts Fest next spring, beginning Wednesday, May 1-Sunday, May 5, and featured on all marketing efforts.
Go on display in City Hall as part of the City of North Charleston’s Public Art Collection.
The winning artist will:
Receive a $1,000 purchase award.
Have a solo exhibition at the Park Circle Gallery in May.
There is no entry fee to participate, and the competition is open to SC residents ages 18 or older. Entries can be submitted online by Friday, Dec. 15; artists can enter three pieces.
