What do Carnes Crossroads, Cane Bay, and Nexton all have in common? They’re relatively new inland communities not far from Charleston that are absolutely exploding with growth. Over the next few months, we’ll head to Berkeley County to explore these areas + what they have to offer. Up first is Nexton.
A mix of nature + modern developments, Nexton is a Summerville community rapidly expanding with new homes, schools, restaurants, and retail.
Location
This Master-Planned Community, nestled among tall pines, is situated just off Charleston’s I-26 corridor and connected by a network of walking and biking trails. Currently, there are four main areas where dining and retail spots are located.

An attainable housing project plans to bring 100 townhomes to Carolina Park (near the Costco in Mount Pleasant). The homes will be available for buyers earning 80 to 150 percent of the area median income (~$77,800-$146,000). The average price for a townhome in upper Mount Pleasant is ~$500,000. Fencing has been placed along part of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge to prevent people from driving in the pedestrian travel lane. This comes after an incident in November where a visiting couple from Florida accidentally drove onto the pedestrian path. (WCBD)

The sanctuary of Fort Johnson Baptist Church on Camp Road on James Island will reopen Sunday after it was struck by lightning and nearly destroyed by a fire in September of 2021. After $5.4 million of work, it will reopen for Sunday service at 10:30 a.m. on March 17. (WCSC)

A Japanese ‘flying car’ company with Lowcountry ties has started production of a prototype aircraft. The company established its US home base in Beaufort County (~70 miles from Charleston) and outlined its plan to develop an advanced air mobility ecosystem in SC. The Charleston Animal Society is celebrating 150 years of helping animals in the Lowcountry. In 1874, it was formed as the first animal protection organization in South Carolina.
Fun facts
Charleston Animal Society helped Charleston County become the first No Kill Community in the Southeast in 2013.
The organization responds to animals in crisis as a result of both man-made and natural disasters.
The group has changed names and locations a few times over the years, but its mission has stayed the same: to prevent animal cruelty. Take a deep dive into the history of the organization.
