Smell that? That’s the smell of summer. Sunscreen, sand, salt water, and... wet dog? Follow along to read about how you can have a beach day with your pup while following local regulations.

Isle of Palms

Permits | Dogs who are there must have a permit that displays their vaccines readily available at all times. They should also have a metal tag on the collar that acts as a license to show they have the rabies vaccine. Get your permit for free at the Isle of Palms Police Department at 30 J C Long Blvd.

Play time | Your pup can run wild and free off-leash from 5 to 9 a.m., April 1 to Sept. 14. The times change to 4 p.m. to 10 a.m. starting Sept. 15 until March 31. Be sure to have your leash handy at all times.

CHStoday Sullivan dog

We promise our friends golden retriever “Sullivan” is very happy to be on the beach, he is just a grumpy old pup.

Folly Beach

Play time | Dogs are only allowed on-leash at Folly but they can be on the beach between 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. from May 1 to Sept. 30.

Permits | All dogs are required to have a license to be on the island. Licenses are $25 for residents and $50 for non-residents. You can get one by presenting your rabies vaccine, driver’s license, and current address to Town Hall at 2056 Middle St.

Play time | Summer dogs can play from May 1 to Sept. 30 from 5 to 10 a.m. off leash and 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. on leash. In the off-season (Oct. 1 to April 30), pets can be off-leash from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on-leash from 12 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Friendly reminder for all beaches: Clean up after your pooch.

Duke’s “Hot Tomato Summer” returns to Charleston

Tomatoes and mayo are an iconic southern summer pairing. For the fifth year, Duke’s Mayo is bringing back its celebration of that very duo — Hot Tomato Summer.

What is Hot Tomato Summer?

The 10-day event invites local restaurants to whip up their most creative recipes, and will happen this year from Thursday, July 17, through Sunday, July 27. The only rule? They must use Duke’s Mayo and tomatoes.
This mouthwatering photo showcases a grilled chicken melt loaded with gooey cheese, sautéed peppers, and savory sauce on toasted bread. It's served with crispy fries and topped with tiny pickles.

Our mouths are already watering; we can’t wait to try this sandwich.

Which restaurants are participating?

With 80+ participating restaurants in the Charleston area, here are just a few of our recommendations.
  • Félix Cocktails et Cuisine | Grilled Chicken Melt | The perfect summer sandwich is... sun-dried tomatoes, tomato and bacon jam, and roasted garlic Duke’s aioli on a hoagie roll.
  • 167 Raw Oyster Bar | Caviar BLT | The umami will be strong in this dish featuring lardo iberico, Regiis Ova Hybrid Caviar, and smoked tomato mayo.
  • Heavy’s Barburger | Heavy’s BLT | This sandwich is going to take two hands to contain as it’s stacked with fresh local tomatoes, applewood smoked bacon + lettuce with Duke’s Mayo on Normandy Farm Sourdough.
Check out the other local spots and what they’re offering; just tap the Charleston tab at the top of the page.

How can I take part?

During the event, dine at the participating restaurants and try the mayo + tomato-themed specials. You’ll get the chance to vote online for your favorite dish to win the “Golden Tomato” award.

Psst... there’s also Hot Tomato Summer merch. (Because we all need a mayo jar pool floatie.)

How well do you know your way around the map of Charleston?

Last week, we put your knowledge of Charleston cartography to the test. And now we’re here to celebrate the first person to score 100% on our pop quiz.

A map of the Charleston area with three large dots laid overtop the map. In one of the dots is a photo of Joe Riley Waterfront Park, in another is a photo of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, and in the third is a photo of Sullivan's Island Lighthouse.

Can you guess the Holy City venue based on just its address?

Even if you’re planning to let your pup roam un-tethered, it’s always good to have a leash in hand. Even better if the leash is cute as heck.

Local brand Covey Collection will make any mutt strut — peep the matching collar, leash, and waste bag holder.
