  • Meherwan Irani, a James Beard Award-winning chef and owner of the Asheville, NC restaurant Chani Pani, is bringing the second location of his spice shop to the Holy City. Spicewalla plans to open at 49 John St. in mid-July and sell 200+ spices and more than 60 diverse blends. (The Post and Courier)

  • La Nortena, a North Charleston Mexican eatery on Rivers Avenue, will close its doors this Sunday, June 30. The restaurant has served the community for 21 years. See the announcement.

  • Charleston’s Emma Navarro is headed to Paris. Navarro has been named to the US Women’s Olympic tennis team and will play alongside Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Danielle Collins. The Ashley Hall alum and former NCAA singles champion is currently ranked No. 17 on the Women’s Tennis Association Tour. (WCBD)

  • Mayor Cogswell is bringing back the Coffee with the Mayor initiative. The event will give residents the chance to speak directly with the mayor. The first event will be held at Gold Star Coffee in Johns Island this Thursday, June 27 — stay tuned for info on future events.
Environment
  • Poe’s Tavern on Sullivan’s Island has added a new twist to their beach cleanups. Guests can grab a bucket at the restaurant’s entrance, pick up litter, bring it back, and the business will offer a free drink or appetizer. This initiative will run through the end of the summer season. (WCSC)

  • Head to The Oaks at Mount Pleasant Towne Centre on Saturday, June 29 for Lights & Love, a special event for families with children on the spectrum. From 2-4 p.m., enjoy live entertainment, kids’ activities (think: fairy hair, balloon animals, a bounce house, and crafts), food, drinks + more. Browse vendors.*

Charleston ranks highly in categories for TripAdvisors’ Best of the Best in the US

Drumroll, please. TripAdvisor has released its 2024 Travelers’ Choice Awards’ Best of the Best in the US list, and the Holy City ranked highly in some of the categories. The website wrote, “Historic Charleston is bursting with Southern charm and hospitality.”

What can we say, Charleston...is it really a surprise? Here’s where we ranked:
Two hotels snagged a spot on TripAdvisors’ Best of the Best hotels in the US.
  • The Loutrel at 61 State St. ranked No. 6 and said visitors will “enjoy peak Southern hospitably” with “spacious rooms and ultra-comfy beds”
  • French Quarter Inn at 166 Church St. came in at No. 15 and was described as a “nice mix of old-world charm and modern comfort”
And Halls Chophouse ranked at No. 3 for fine dining. The steakhouse was described as “serving prime steaks, Lowcountry and fresh seafood specialties in an energetic, visually striking environment.”
