Latest update
The project’s landscape architect, Nelson Byrd Woltz, has reached the final stages of the development phase. Liollio Architecture, the firm designing the welcome center, is entering the schematic design phase later this month. In this phase, the team will define the structure and layout of the center, and it is expected to take about three to four months.
The project is scheduled to break ground in late summer 2025 and is expected to open in ~two years.

Charleston City leaders have approved a plan to redevelop the vacant Sumar Street site in West Ashley. The project, set to begin early next year, will include retail, residential areas, and green space. (WCBD)

West Ashley’s homegrown restaurant, The Glass Onion, is bringing back its breakfast and brunch service later this month. Menu items include the Farmer Frittata, Fried Green Tomato Po-Boy, French toast, and Belle’s Breakfast Sausage. Stay tuned on Instagram for the official launch date.
Environment
The SC Aquarium recently admitted its smallest sea turtle patient. Chia, found entangled in marine debris, was brought to the aquarium weighing less than 1.5 pounds—about the same as 48 tablespoons of chia seeds. Take a look at this tiny survivor’s progress.

Did you know? The Roosevelt Retreat on the Isle of Palms was built by a cousin of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and eventually passed down to Charleston gardener and author Emily Whaley. Development
Goose Creek is set to build a new arts center after demolishing The Goose Creek Prayer and Wedding Chapel, which it purchased in 2022. The new building will preserve the look and feel of the original chapel, providing a community space for hosting events. See the full update. (WCIV)
