Every February, the US observes Black History Month.
From art and music to food and historical tours, here are some ways to celebrate in Charleston this year.
Educational tours
Gullah Tour | Discover the rich culture and history shaped by Black Charlestonians. Led by local guides, these tours highlight stories and landmarks significant to the Gullah community. Tours start at $25.
Charleston’s African American History + Heritage Tour | Bulldog Tours is offering this special tour exclusively during Black History Month. The two-hour guided experience begins at Liberty Square on Concord Street and explores Charleston’s African American history from the past to the present. Tickets are $10.
Music, arts + storytelling
Black History Month celebrations in Mount Pleasant | Every Saturday in February, the Town of Mount Pleasant will host free, family-friendly events. The month-long festivities include concerts, storytelling sessions, and a community panel discussion.
Thursday, Feb. 6 Heroes Among Us, Last Man Out, Saigon/Kabul Symposium | 5:30-7 p.m. | The Citadel | $10 | Hear inspiring stories from Medal of Honor Recipient Major General James E. Livingston, USMC (Ret.), and Colonel Alexander Pelbath, USAF (Ret.).
Garden Lights | Through Saturday, Feb. 22 | 6-8:30 p.m. | Middleton Place | $10+ | Explore America’s oldest landscaped gardens in a whole new light as you walk through glowing pathways and illuminated garden rooms.
Wine & Chocolate Tasting | 6-8 p.m. | Mercantile & Mash | $85 | Enjoy an intimate evening learning and tasting the intricacies of wine and chocolate pairings.
James Island Town Market | 6-9 p.m. | Town Hall Parking Lot | Free | Enjoy live music, crafts, lawn games, food trucks, and fresh produce.
Contra Dance | 7:30-10:30 p.m. | Ballroom Dance Charleston | $10+ | Meet new people while experiencing this social interaction set to music played by live bands.
Galentine’s Day Cocktail Tour | Through Saturday, Feb. 22 | Bulldog Tours | $108 | Celebrate female friendships with visits to three upscale lounges while learning about the prominent women who shaped our city.
Saturday, Feb. 8 Planting in the Lowcountry | 2-3:30 p.m. | Daniel Island Library | Free | Dylan McGuire, the garden manager for the College of Charleston Student Gardens, will host a talk on spring planting, followed by snacks.
Oysters on the Point | Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina, Mount Pleasant | $10+ | Enjoy locally steamed oysters, live music, a Bloody Mary Bar, and plenty of beer choices.
The Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Mount Pleasant have teamed up for the fourth annual Dine Where You Live campaign, running through the end of the month. The campaign encourages locals to support the town’s food and beverage scene, with the chamber giving away a $50 gift card to a lucky diner each week.
Opening
Local veteran Jim Daniloff is opening his second Summerville wine + licquor store, The Packie - Nexton, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this Saturday, Feb. 8, at 12 p.m. The store will be open Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. His first location is on Dorchester Road.
Coming Soon
Ice, ice, baby — Zachary’s Daiquiris is set to open at the corner of King and Anne Streets on Friday, Feb. 28. The new spot will feature 12 house-made frozen daiquiris with locally inspired names like The Folly and Rainbow Row, plus a full bar. Guests can also enjoy dips, spreads, salads, and sandwiches.
Environment
Yellowstone Landscape crews removed 33 bald cypress trees from Colonial Lake Park as part of a two-year revitalization plan. The Charleston Parks Conservancy will introduce new plantings to improve biodiversity and sustainability. A redesign proposal will be ready in March for community input. (The Post and Courier)

College of Charleston student Grace-Miller Moody wowed “The Voice” judges with her rendition of “Sunday Morning” by Maroon 5, and chose a spot on Adam Levine’s team. Watch her journey on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC or stream on Peacock the next day. (WCBD)

Huntington Ingalls Industries, the country’s largest military shipbuilder, is expanding to Goose Creek after acquiring W International, a shipbuilding facility. The expansion is expected to create 250+ jobs. (WCSC)

The new Mount Pleasant Makers Mart will kick off May 2 at The Park West Recreation Complex. Running Fridays through October, the event will feature local farmers’ food products, artisans, and other local happenings in the community. (WCSC)
