Hurricane season is here, and we want to help you stay ready. Forecasters predict this season will be busy, so this guide will update you on evacuation zones, refresh you on preparing for a storm, and provide some resources to stay weather-aware.

Evacuation zones

State leaders unveiled new hurricane evacuation zones last year to better accommodate the growing population and to avoid potential hazards. Factors like storm surge risk + flood susceptibility played a role in creating the new zones.

Ever wonder who our wildest neighbors are? Hint: They don’t live in houses.

This summer, come say “hi” to them at the South Carolina Aquarium. Located right on the scenic Charleston Harbor, the Aquarium invites you to explore South Carolina’s habitats — from mountain forests all the way to the coast.

🐬 Hands-on fun

Feed friendly cownose rays, feel the texture of a sea star, and maybe even spot wild dolphins splashing in the harbor. Feeling adventurous? Take a virtual reality dive underwater or get an up-close look at sea turtle rehabilitation happening live.

☀️ Summer events

Enjoy fun events like kids’ dance classes, a sustainable seafood dinner with wine pairings, yoga beneath the Great Ocean Tank’s glow, and more.

News Notes

Announced

SCDOT is conducting routine inspections of the Ravenel Bridge — the good news is that minor traffic impacts are expected. Work will occur daily from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Friday, June 13, and Tuesday, July 8, through Friday, July 18.

Development

The Shem Creek Bridge Bike Lanes Project is underway. During this time, expect sidewalk + lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday through Thursday, until the project is complete. Pro tip: The boardwalk and park will remain open to enjoy the views.

History

Downtown has added a new historic marker at 24 King St. This Federal-style house was built around 1786, with a third story and a hipped roof added by 1888. Tap here to learn more about the property’s history and notable residents.

Kids

Boneyard Beach is open, just in time for summer. Make plans to visit the new touch tank experience at the SC Aquarium to get your hands on a diverse range of species found on (and off) the SC coast. Fun fact: It was named for the bleached trees-lined shore found on Bulls Island.

Cause

Bloom Charleston is around the corner + tickets for the Opening Night Garden Party are now available. On Friday, Oct. 17, at Colonial Lake, there will be an all-inclusive evening celebrating the Charleston Parks Conservancy’s mission.

Civic

Listen up, golf cart owners. A new law went into effect on Thursday, May 22, changing some guidelines. One of the new rules requires children under 12 to wear a seatbelt; see the rest of the rules. (WYFF 4)

Development

Construction on the outside of the main branch of the Charleston County Public Library is underway and expected to last up to two weeks. Good news — the library remains open, and services won’t be interrupted. (WCSC)

Sports

Not one, but two Lowcountry baseball teams are state champions. The James Island Trojans won the 5A - Division 1 title + the Berkeley Stags took home the 5A - Division 2 State Title. Congratulations. (WCSC)
