Today, the Charleston County Council is expected to vote to give final approval to a James Island safety improvement project. The proposal includes adding a stoplight at the Fort Johnson Road and Secessionville Road intersection, plus a roundabout on Camp Road. Construction is expected to take a year and a half to complete. Develpoment
Mount Pleasant could be getting its first Zaxby’s — the chicken-finger chain has filed plans for Park West Boulevard. This would make the 12th location in the Charleston area. The proposed plans are set to be presented to the commercial design review board tomorrow, Aug. 27. (The Post and Courier)
Weather
Nearly two feet of rain has fallen across the Lowcountry this month. Areas with the highest precipitation totals include Edisto Beach (23+ inches), Mount Pleasant (21+ inches), and downtown Charleston (~20 inches). Meteorologist Joey Sovine said the average precipitation for August is typically fewer than 7 inches. (WCSC)
Announced
The South Carolina Ports Authority’s President and CEO, Barbara Melvin, resigned last week. Melvin led the agency for three years and was the first woman to be appointed to the position. The former Chief Financial Officer and VP of Administration, Phillip Padget, has taken over as interim CEO. (WCBD)
Open
Trident United Way recently opened its first Charleston County location and has plans for a second. The new site opened at the Charleston County Public Library’s Main Library earlier this month, and there are plans to open a North Charleston location. The centers help connect folks to financial resources. (The Post and Courier)

$50,000. That’s how much the grant Bertha’s Kitchen won, which aims to help culinary landmarks. The funds will help upgrade and grow the business, enabling improvements to historic buildings. (Charleston City Paper)
