Consultations are highly personalized — our team saw how doctors discuss goals, options, and realistic outcomes with patients. | Photos by the CHStoday team
When people think of plastic surgery, they often picture full-body procedures. But did you know there’s a specialty dedicated solely to the eyes and surrounding structures?

The CHStoday team recently visited Charleston Oculofacial Plastic Surgery to learn what makes these surgeons unique — plus what a consultation and recovery typically involve.

Why choose an oculofacial surgeon

Unlike general plastic surgeons, oculofacial plastic surgeons are ophthalmologists first, then complete extra fellowship training focused entirely on surgery of the eyelids, tear ducts, and facial anatomy around the eyes. This ultra-specific expertise makes them the go-to option for procedures in refreshing and rejuvenating this delicate area.

What the consultation was like

Our visit included a thorough health history review and a discussion of personalized options, ranging from surgical (like as blepharoplasty) to nonsurgical treatments like lasers or fillers.

Recovery insights

We learned that recovery usually involves bruising and swelling for about 7–14 days, with gradual improvement each week. Stitches are typically removed within five toseven days, and patients are advised to avoid makeup, contact lenses, and heavy exercise for one to two weeks.

Light daily activities can resume sooner, and following post-procedure instructions helps ensure the best results. Most patients feel “socially presentable” within two weeks, with full healing continuing over several months.

News Notes

Development

The request to demolish a century-old historic building, which houses The Bicycle Shoppe and Theatre 99, was denied. Over 400 people submitted comments online, urging preservation of the historic site. The City of Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review – Large did opt to demolish the rear structure. (WCBD)

Civic

The City of Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review approved Charleston Housing Authority’s plan to redevelop 275 Huger Street. The project will replace a 12-unit structure with a new 77-unit community. Construction is set to start after the permitting stage, and units are slated to be ready by 2027. (WCIV)

Development

The Lowcountry could help shape the next PGA Champion. How, you ask? A youth golf center is being proposed for Henry Tecklenburg Drive in West Ashley (behind St. Francis Hospital). The center would feature a nine-hole course, indoor simulators and putting greens, a learning center, and a nutrition lab.

Announced

The City of North Charleston is set to turn the JV Morris Playground into an all-wheels park for skateboarders, BMX riders, and rollerbladers. The city received a petition signed by 300+ residents and 60 local businesses, supporting the change. Construction is set to begin early next year. (WCSC)

Festival

We thought the Food & Wine Classic in Charleston couldn’t get any better. The team has just announced more special guests who will be at the festival next month. Ciara, Regina King, and Tony Dokoupil are all set to take the stage to share their love of food.
Award-winning music star and Charleston’s own Darius Rucker is tying the knot. Rucker took to social media to announce his engagement to Emily Deahl, a SC-born singer, songwriter, and content creator. Celebrate with the happy couple this weekend at Riverfront Revival.

Plan Ahead

Next spring, “Dancing with the Stars” will make a stop at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. Mark your calendar for Thursday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the show go on sale today at 10 a.m. (Holy City Sinner)
