Which clan do you hail from? What do bagpipes rolling along the Cooper River sound like? What exactly is a sheaf toss?

All these questions can be answered at the 54th Annual Charleston Scottish Games and Highland Gathering on Saturday, Nov. 1.

Schedule

Gates open at 8 a.m. at Riverfront Park. There’s a lot to explore at this event, but here are some of the highlights:
  • Throughout the day, there will be athletic competitions and demonstrations. If you’ve never seen a hammer throw or caber toss, this is your chance.
  • At 9 a.m., the highland dancing competition begins. See talented dancers compete in form, technique, stamina, and strength.
  • We love a dog with a job. Watch border collies and their handlers show off their herding skills at 1:15 p.m. in the South Field.

Step into Appalachian music history at The Asheville Sessions

Experience Appalachia’s rich musical traditions at “The Asheville Sessions: Celebrating 100 years of Americana & Appalachia,” Thursday, Nov. 6-Sunday, Nov. 9, with panels + performances throughout Asheville.

100 years after “The Asheville Sessions” in 1925, where Asheville became the first Appalachian city to record country music at a makeshift downtown studio, the city is once again bringing Blue Ridge voices together.

The weekend is highlighted by a concert at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium on Saturday, Nov. 8 featuring talented local artists.

Civic

Today at 5:30 p.m., the City of Charleston will host a meeting at Haut Gap Middle School to hear from the community on a proposed Johns Island Recreation Center design. You’ll be able to discuss floor plan ideas, recreational programming, and site considerations. (Holy City Sinner)

Closing

After nearly a decade on IOP, Papi’s Taqueria is set to close its doors. In an Instagram post, the team wrote, “This is a truly bittersweet goodbye as it carries both a heavy heart and a grateful smile.” The last day will be Sunday, Nov. 2. Stay tuned for what’s taking over 1012 Ocean Blvd.

Civic

The city is hosting a series of meetings to discuss the proposed Transportation Sales Tax Referendum and road projects. The next meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m., the focus will be on West Ashley and downtown roadway projects. Join the next meeting in person or online.

The decades-old Sand Dollar Social Club has been listed with $3 million price tag. The beloved Folly Beach spot — known for its laid-back island vibe where locals and visitors can enjoy music, drinks, and make memories — has hit the market. (The Post and Courier)
