South Carolina is the No. 17 best state to start a business in the US, according to a new report from WalletHub. That’s certainly true for Charleston, where our small business scene is full of gems, including these three we’re loving at the moment:
  • Head to Harken Cafe to sip thoughtfully crafted coffee in calm, welcoming spaces, with an abundance of natural light and greenery.
  • The Tiny Tassel is a boutique, Black and Asian woman-owned store that’s all over social media, offering colorful accessories, gifts, and joyful little finds designed to brighten your day.
  • Get lost wandering through The Station in Park Circle, where a rotating mix of vintage clothing, decor, trinkets, and furniture makes every visit feel like a treasure hunt.

On January 26, 1932, a New York doctor subverted prohibition laws to benefit visiting British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The physician wrote a letter claiming Churchill’s recovery from an accident “necessitates the use of alcoholic spirits, especially at mealtimes.” No doctor’s note needed here — local happy hours await. Remember when almost every artist would release live albums? Streaming has drastically changed our access to live music, but we can still reminisce on the best examples from history. An album is good, but the real thing is better.

With the summer months — and some warmer weather — approaching, here’s your sign to start planning an open air concert or two this year at one of Charleston’s outdoor music venues:

Firefly Distillery | North Charleston | This distillery hosts both small and large-scale events, offering marsh views, local food trucks, and refreshing Firefly cocktails.

Credit One Stadium | Daniel Island | With its large capacity, this stadium brings entertainers from across the country to perform in the Lowcountry.

The Charleston Pour House | James Island | The Deck stage offers a lively atmosphere with a diverse lineup of acts.

The Windjammer | Isle of Palms | This long-standing, beachside venue is perfect for enjoying live music, beach views, and delicious food.

The Wrap

January and February can be hard on people. This week, I hope you find time to do something kind for yourself.

Watch a comforting movie, get outside and put your face in the sun (even if it’s cold), stretch your hips + hamstrings, cook something you love, and take a second to smell the roses. Or, as Marcus Aurelius wrote, “Dwell on the beauty of life.”
