The 2026 James Beard Award semifinalists have been announced, and we’ve got eight local nominees to shout about.

With such wonderful food + drinks on offer, it can be daunting to first look at these establishments’ menus. We’re here to make sure you get your order right the first time.

Hector Garate, Palmira Barbecue, Emerging Chef

Modern twists on classic eats are owner and pitmaster Garate’s specialty. Make sure to check the daily specials, but the Tripleta Sandwich is a thing of beauty. Don’t sleep on a side order of Puerto Rican beans.

Merci, Best New Restaurant

The Pitt Street bistro has been making waves since it opened. Keep your eyes peeled for a five-course tasting event. Psst — there’s one on Valentine’s Day.

Welton’s Tiny Bakeshop, Outstanding Bakery

Keeping it simple and cooking with love is what got Welton’s a nomination. Head to the King Street spot and take your pick of whatever pastries people haven’t snatched up yet. Alternatively, get a party pastry to entertain a crowd, because sweet treats are best enjoyed together.

Real Estate

Do you remember the Sullivan’s Island “wedding cake house”? It was knocked down a couple of years ago, but now has a $16 million replacement in its place at 3209 Marshall Blvd., and its white, round exterior is an homage to its predecessor. (Post and Courier)

“As long as the community and council is comfortable with those existing funds getting down to that low level, the money is on hand.” That’s what Isle of Palms City Administrator Douglas Kerr said about a beach renourishment project lacking $10 million in funds. What’s their plan? (Post and Courier)

Plan Ahead

Excitement is building for the 2026 edition of Charleston Wine + Food — the 20th time it has taken over the Holy City. Did you know the event has contributed $191 million to the local economy since its inception? That’s a lot of oysters.

Announced

Folk-rock band Lord Huron is bringing its tour to the Lowcountry. The band will be at Credit One Stadium for its “Summer 2026" tour on Tuesday, June 16. Ticket presales are underway.

Eat

It’s the Lowcountry-Japanese fusion dish you didn’t know you needed, until now. North Charleston’s Katsubō is adding Godzilla Ramen to its menu, pictured above, for the upcoming SEWE 2026 celebrations. It’s a brothless ramen topped with crispy gator tail. Make it snappy.

Pets

Cows might be smarter than we thought. A Swiss Brown cow named Veronika has been seen using a stick to scratch her back — reportedly the first time cattle have shown they can use tools. See if you can teach the animal in your life some new tricks at one of Charleston’s dog-friendly spots. (BBC)

1,116. That’s how many responses we received from readers during our Giving Campaign.

We analyzed all of those responses to learn more about what you enjoy — and want to see more of — in our newsletters. Here’s what you said:
  • ~20-25% of messages expressed that local info + events are our key value. These readers probably love the Events and News Note sections of our newsletter, along with our monthly Plan Ahead.
  • ~15–20% highlighted CHStoday’s fun, positive tone.
  • ~10% said that we’re part of their morning routine, and we couldn’t be happier to accompany your morning cup of coffee.
  • ~10% praised our brevity + easy-to-read format, so we’ll be sure to keep this short.
  • Several people also called out our support of small businesses + our “no-politics” approach. Psst: More formalized small business coverage is coming soon, so be on the lookout.

The Wrap

Writing this newsletter made me even hungrier than usual. If you didn’t look at the full list of James Beard nominees, Charleston’s eight more-than-doubled the rest of South Carolina combined.

Let’s be greedy here. Which restaurants, bars, or other establishments should have made the cut? Let me know.
