The warmer weather is set to return this week, and if you’re looking for an adventure, the Lowcountry is perfect for digging up shells + shark teeth.

Keep reading to discover local groups offering ecotours that let you enjoy the great outdoors.

Coastal Expeditions | Explore the Lowcountry with a tour on a paddleboard, canoe, kayak, or a boat. The Bulls Island Tour caught our eye — this is a 66,000-acre wildlife refuge where you can spot sea turtles, dolphins, wood storks, and eagles.

Sandlapper Water Tours | See what you can spot in the tides as you take in the one-of-a-kind scenery and wildlife. Pro tip: The group also offers a tour geared towards students with extra hands-on learning opportunities.

If getting dirt under your fingernails isn’t really your thing, don’t stress. Tap the button below for ways to explore without getting pluff mud on your new shirt.

They don’t call it Flowertown for nothing. Summerville is now home to Seene, a new coffee house and garden venue. The spot offers elevated coffee and tea experiences, and its social club — which is open to the public — features live DJs and curated community experiences.

Mansion Monday

No, this is not the latest issue of Architectural Digest, but we understand why you may have thought so. This 5,362-sqft New Street home looks like a page out of the magazine. See the historic grand staircase — we think this is an ideal spot for this year’s family photos.

Announced

Ready to rock Riverfront? The countdown is on to High Water Festival. This year’s schedule dropped, and it’s loaded with talent. We’re eyeing Sheryl Crow’s set. The annual music festival returns April 18-19.

History

March is Women’s History Month, a dedicated time to celebrate the achievements of women throughout US history. Here in the Holy City, the Charleston Museum is honoring the occasion with Lessons in Watercolor Painting from Charleston’s Historic Women Artists.

Today is

March second’s the date, hip hip hooray: Dr. Seuss was born on this day. To the Charleston County Public Library, don’t wait up. For fun times reading, you can fill your cup. A child’s first book, a joyful start — a love of reading, straight from the heart.

Fun Fact

Charleston is still the largest city in the Palmetto State. In 1860, nearly 49,000 people called the Holy City home. More than 150 years later — and after adding more than 100,000 residents — the 2020 Census shows that still holds true, with the population now topping 150,000. (WCBD)
Voting is open for the European Tree of the Year award, the annual contest that honors the continent’s most lovable tree. The contestants span 12 countries and boast centuries of history within their sprawling branches. Speaking of history, we looked at the story of Charleston’s Angel Oak.

Biz

What do Huggies, Kazoobie Kazoos, and Duke’s Mayo have in common? They’re all nominated for The Coolest Thing Made in SC, an annual contest celebrating our state’s manufacturing industry. Vote for your favorites by Thursday, March 5, to see them move to the top 8 round.*

Sports

If you didn’t win our recently-closed Finals Weekend ticket giveaway with the Credit One Charleston Open, don’t worry. You can still grab tickets and experience the tournament, happening March 28 through April 5.*

Learn

Paleontologists recently discovered a new species of Spinosaurus in the Sahara Desert. They believe the dinosaur lived roughly 95 million years ago and weighed up to seven tons. There’s no need to travel across the world to uncover our planet’s history — we have plenty on display at Charleston’s museums. (Reuters)

Real Estate

The question many local buyers have considered: buy now or wait for lower rates? In high-demand areas like Mount Pleasant, Isle of Palms, and downtown, the answer may depend on more than interest rates alone. Take a closer look at how appreciation, competition, and refinancing options factor into the decision.*

After looking over the menu, we’re hungry for the Buffalo chicken pockets.

Let us introduce you to a surprising, tasty trend taking over fridges and Lowes Foods grocery carts across Charleston: Rotisserie chickens are more popular than ever, according to Google Trends.

No judgment if you want to house one straight from the bag with your hands, but we’re using the surge in interest as an opportunity to highlight some of the best local spots to scratch that scrumptious itch:
  • Kickin’ Chicken...chicken is its middle name — well, kinda. You get the picture, they serve chicken all kinds of ways.
  • For wings, you have to visit Home Team BBQ; their smoked wings are iconic, and don’t sleep on the Alabama white sauce.
The great thing about both of these spots is that they have several locations all across the Lowcountry.

The Wrap

This isn’t technically an ecotour, but it’s too cool not to mention. Enter: The Center for Birds of Prey is a conservation center in Awendaw that’s home to ~50 species of birds.

Pro tip: Get up close to wild birds through flight demonstrations and the center’s educational programs.
