March is Women’s History Month, and we’re taking a look at the legacy of Charleston-born Helen von Kolnitz Hyer, who was the Palmetto State’s second poet laureate (a government-appointed poet who is asked to compose works). Fun fact: She was the first woman to hold the title.
Did you know? Hyer was one of the earliest members of the SC Poetry Society, founded by Charleston Renaissance figures like DuBose Heyward, Laura Bragg, and Josephine Pinckney.
Hyer attended Ashley Hall, where one of her early poems became the school song, and once served as the Curator of Public Instruction at the Charleston Museum.

🍴 You know what day it is — Food Rec Friday. Today’s adventure takes us to Sullivan’s Fish Camp.
Ideally, you’d visit when it’s sunny, 75, and breezy. I recommend snacking on a few menu items. My must-order bites include Sully’s Hush Puppy Tots, broiled oysters, and the “side salad” that is much more than a side size.
The only thing you need to round out your experience is a few good friends to share the meal with, and maybe an extra order of honey butter for those hush puppy tots.
