On Monday, the City of Charleston Recreation Department launched “One Charleston” – the new Parks and Recreation Master Plan, which will lead policies and directions for the city’s leaders, Parks Department and Recreation department for the next 10 years.

The department’s first step is opening the dialogue to the community through a survey asking for public input + feedback. You will be able to join the conversation on topics such as what you want to see in the parks, how they can be improved + what suggestions you have to improve the quality of life for Charleston residents and visitors.

Due to coronavirus concerns, feedback will be submitted virtually. The community is being asked to submit questions and suggestions in one (or a couple) of these ways:

An online survey. Physical copies will be available at recreation + community centers as they reopen.

The department’s MindMixer site (an online engagement site where the community can continue to provide input throughout the year-long planning process). Discussion topics will change as the process advances.

The Master Plan Website. Links are provided for surveys + online engagement, as well as information on future workshops, presentations and open houses.

○ Public open houses. These will be conducted later in the year in conjunction with the City’s Comprehensive Plan process. Keep an eye on the Master Plan Website for more information.

○ Stakeholder group discussions. A series of stakeholder groups of park and recreation users, community leaders, and partners will be invited to provide their input specific to their group’s interests.

○ Public Presentations. The draft and final Master Plans will be presented in a public forum later in the process for the Community’s review and discussion.
