$4 billion. The estimated cost of the I-526 widening project. The Lowcountry Corridor EAST project would add four lanes to 13 miles of highway from North Charleston to Mt. Pleasant — doubling its width at a cost of $308 million per mile. In other words — this will be the most expensive road project in SC.

What does the project involve?

  • Replacing the Don Holt Bridge with two higher parallel bridges
  • Replacing the Wando Bridge with two lower parallel bridges
  • Restructuring the Long Point Road interchange in Mt. Pleasant
  • Relocating dozens of residences + businesses

There will be two in-person meetings to discuss the plan. The first meeting will be held tonight at the R. L. Jones Center in Mt. Pleasant, followed by a meeting tomorrow night at the Felix C. Davis Community Center in North Charleston.

Get involved at the ongoing virtual public information hearing.
