Drainage improvement efforts on Johns Island have received new funding. The SC Office of Resilience granted $4.6 million to the City of Charleston’s Barberry Woods Drainage Improvement Project.

The Barberry Woods neighborhood encounters flooding issues during storms caused by a combination insufficient stormwater infrastructure and runoff from the watershed.

The project will consider the natural context of the area and follow the Dutch Dialogues recommendations, which focus on conservation, community, and connectivity while mitigating flooding.

Mayor Tecklenburg said that the project is a key part of the city’s work to reduce flooding on John Island. View more project details and maps here.
