Today is National Nonprofit Day, and we’re highlighting a few local orgs where you can spread the love — either through volunteering or donation.

Help the community
  • Lowcountry Local First | Make a donation or sign up to advocate for the local business community in Charleston.
  • Warrior Surf Foundation | Help veterans with surf therapy and wellness.
  • Be a Mentor | Empower students to reach their full potential. Or become a Pathlighter member by donating regularly.
  • Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center | Help children feel safe + comfortable by becoming a child advocate, helping with facility repairs, or joining an event committee. Donations are also welcome.
  • Mental Health HEROES | Donate to support the mission of the Charleston Dorchester Mental Health Center.
  • We Are Family | Participate in community outreach and donate to benefit Charleston’s LGBTQ+ youth.

  • Charleston Habitat for Humanity | Arrange a pickup of donated home items for the ReStore. You can also drop off items directly at 731 Meeting St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
  • Trident United Way | If you can’t wait for the Days of Caring in November, make a donation today to improve the educational outcomes of students in our area.

  • Big news for Kiawah and Seabrook Islanders — a plan was approved this week for a brand-new retail center complete with a spacious supermarket. The existing 38,000-sqft Harris Teeter Village Market grocery store could expand to nearly 65,000 sqft. The project has an estimated timeline of beginning in 2027. (The Post and Courier)

The rich tapestry of Gullah Geechee culture plays an integral part of Charleston’s heritage that has woven its way through time.

Let’s take a journey to explore the Gullah Geechee culture by visiting some of these historic locations around the city:
  • The Penn Center is a cultural and educational center dedicated to preserving and promoting Gullah Geechee history. Online, you can see a timeline of its history.
  • The McLeod Plantation Historic Site offers a perspective on Southern history, including the experience of the Gullah people.
  • Avery Research Center focuses on Black American history, including the Gullah Geechee people and you can find online artifacts, crafts, and photographs that offer insights into the Gullah Geechee people.
  • Gullah Geechee Preservation Project — which has recently been granted $100,000 to the Gullah Geechee Preservation Project in Charleston — has an upcoming online informational session on Monday, Aug. 21. Register online.
