Looking to impress your guests this holiday season? Get ready for the holidays at Illumination Charleston, happening Friday, Dec. 1-Saturday, Dec. 2 hosted by Explore Charleston and Southern Living.

The event includes a weekend of live cooking demonstrations and shopping opportunities at a magical holiday market.

Here’s a look at the event lineup:
  • Luminaries Opening Night Party | Friday, Dec. 1 | 5:30-7 p.m. | The Charleston Place Hotel | Kick things off with a party featuring a sensational snowfall display, champagne, and live music.
  • Holiday Market | Saturday, Dec. 2 | 10 a.m.-4 p.m. | The Charleston Visitors Center | A full day of demonstrations and seminars hosted by Southern Living Editors, notable chefs, authors, and Southern personalities, featuring a selection of pop-up booths with gifts available for purchase, food and beverage samplings, and more.
  • Holiday Cocktail Fundraiser | Saturday, Dec. 2 | 6-7:30 p.m. | The Parsonage at St. Johannes |This festive reception features an open bar and delightful cuisine — plus, 100% of the proceeds go directly to support children at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.

  • Andrew Zimmern: Emmy-winning and four-time James Beard Award-winning TV personality, chef, and writer.
  • Jocelyn Delk Adams: founder, author, national television personality, and brand ambassador behind the award-winning cookbook Grandbaby Cakes.

News Notes
Closing
  • Caviar & Bananas, a cafe located at the Charleston International Airport, was given a 90-day notice and told that its long-term lease through 2029 is being terminated. The restaurant must be out by late January, and the company has plans to add another location in Charleston. (The Post and Courier)
Opening
  • Lowlife Bar at Folly Beach will have a new concept called Lost Isle at 3338 Maybank Hwy. The new spot will be a fire-to-table restaurant, serving small plates like whipped ricotta with smoked tomato and larger dishes like grilled whole fish with hazelnut salsa matcha. The opening date is TBA. (Charleston Regional Business Journal)
State
  • The SC Department of Motor Vehicles will offer self-service kiosks in grocery stores known as “SCDMV Express,” allowing customers to complete select tasks instead of going to the DMV. The first Lowcountry location will open in November inside the Publix in The Market at Canebay (1724 State Rd., Summerville).
Concert
  • Pop group “New Kids on the Block” will perform at the Credit One Stadium on July 25, 2024. Paula Abdul and DJ Jazzy Jeff will be special guests. Pre-sale tickets will be on sale tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 2, at noon, and regular tickets start Friday, Nov. 3, at 10 a.m.

Matador will offer some cocktail specials now through tomorrow, Nov. 2. The drinks include Calabaza Margarita, Autumn Twilight, and Harvest Mule.

Jalisco Taqueria | 1271 Folly Rd., Charleston

This Mexican-inspired restaurant in James Island is throwing a Day of the Dead Parking Lot Party today, Nov. 1, from 4-9 p.m. There will be tacos from its food truck with options like pollo tinga, carnitas, and beef barbacoa. Pro tip: Furry friends are welcome too.
