Spoleto Festival USA announces 2024 festival season including more than hundred shows

Spoleto Festival USA has announced the 2024 festival season, including a lineup of stars + more than a hundred performances across the Holy City beginning Friday, May 24 through Sunday, June 9.

This performing arts festival will take place in Charleston’s historic theaters, churches, and outdoor spaces.

The Spoleto Festival USA will span 17 days in Charleston.

2024 festival highlights:
  • The festival will begin with the world premiere of “Ruinous Gods,” an original opera. Four performances (Friday, May 24, Monday, May 27, Wednesday, May 29 + Saturday, June 1) will occur at the College of Charleston’s Sottile Theatre.
  • Yo-Yo Ma, one of the best-known cellists, will return for his sixth festival appearance and first since 1986 at the Charleston Gaillard Center on Thursday, May 30.
  • “The Song of Rome,” by Denis O’Hare and Lisa Peterson, will premiere at The Dock Street Theatre. This piece explores the fall of Ancient Rome and will be performed over six days.
  • The production of “Romeo + Juliet” by the La Dance Project and choreographer Benjamin Millepied will take place on Saturday, May 25, and Sunday, May 26. This will be its first performance with a live orchestra.
  • There will be performances by nationally touring acts: Jason Isbell, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Sasha Velour.

Drink
  • Local brewpub, bar and restaurant, and recent James Beard Award nominee Edmund’s Oast is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Starting Thursday, Feb. 1, there will be 10 days of celebration events. Stay updated on its Instagram.

  • Page’s Okra Grill Nexton at 142 Brighton Park Blvd. in Nexton is officially open. The new spot is open daily and offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This eatery is known for its southern + seafood cuisine.
Development
  • Joint Base Charleston will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its new campus this morning at 9 a.m. The campus will support the five Charleston-based national security cutters and their crews and support personnel located in North Charleston. Completion plans are at the end of 2026. (WCIV)

  • Spirit Airlines announced two new services from the Charleston International Airport. Now, travelers can fly nonstop to Boston (Boston Logan International Airport) and New York (LaGuardia Airport) beginning on Wednesday, April 10. (WCSC)
Cause
  • Kids On Point, a nonprofit supporting students, is hosting Ready.Set.Glow. on Saturday, March 2, from 6-1 1 p.m. This 21+ event will held at The Cistern Yard and will have dancing and pickleball. There is also a raffle and silent auction where attendees can bid on various items and experiences, with one being Taylor Swift concert tickets.

Calling all movers and shakers. Are you ready to become an even more engaged citizen? Do you want to know more about the goings-on in our city before they happen? You can make your voice heard by serving as a volunteer member of one of Charleston’s 30+ boards and commissions.

As a board member, you can weigh in on topics like cycling paths + pedestrian walkways, advise on health and wellness, or contribute to historic development and preservation of cemeteries.

First, though, you have to apply. Luckily, the City of Charleston makes it easy with the Boards+ directory.

Who can apply?

Any citizen residing in Charleston age 18 or older can apply. Pro tip: Depending on the position, certain subject matter expertise may be required. Read the vacancy’s listing to see what it takes.
