Civic

The Town of Mount Pleasant will hold a special election on Tuesday, March 25, to fill Council Member Carl Ritchie’s seat. Ritchie was recently sworn in as the new Charleston County sheriff.

Biz

The US longshoremen reached a tentative agreement for a six-year contract with ports and shippers avoiding a potential strike. Both sides agreed to protect union jobs and allow ports on the East and Gulf coasts to modernize with new technology. (WCIV)

Cause

Plans to expand the Ronald McDonald Charities of Charleston are moving forward. Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review gave preliminary approval for a new five-story building next to their current facility downtown. (WCBD)

History

Robert Smalls, a former enslaved man, Civil War hero, and South Carolina congressman with Charleston ties, will have a permanent place on the SC Statehouse grounds. A committee has approved the design and location for the statue to honor Smalls. (The Post and Courier)
