Women’s History Month is in full swing, and we’re eager to highlight a historic Charleston school that has inspired generations of women in its 116-year history. Ashley Hall was founded by Mary Vardrine McBee in 1909.
Alumnae spotlight:
Barbara Pierce Bush, class of 1943 | The late First Lady was a boarding student and served as team captain for several sporting events and activities. Fun fact: Bush was an angel in the school’s Christmas play.
Mariana “Mini” Hay Avant, class of 2009 | Avant is an artist, jeweler, and entrepreneur + the great-granddaughter of the founder of Croghan’s Jewel Box. After launching her own jewelry line, the Goldbug Collection, Avant has a Spring Street store.
Emma Navarro, class of 2020 | Navarro, a top-ranked tennis player, has competed in everything from college championships to the Olympics.
Note: While the school was exclusively for girls, it now offers education for boys two-to-five years old.
