If you could select a Charleston restaurant, which one would you pick? | Photo provided by @owen_granata
The Michelin Guide is expanding into the southern region of the US by launching the Michelin Guide American South. This new edition will go beyond major metropolitan areas to uncover the region’s rich food culture, highlighting culinary excellence across six southern states, including South Carolina.
How it works
Restaurants selected for the guide must meet Michelin’s historical methodology, based on five universal criteria to ensure fairness across all destinations:
Quality of ingredients
Harmony of flavors
Mastery of cooking techniques
The voice and personality of the chef are reflected in the cuisine
Consistency between each visit and throughout the menu (each restaurant is inspected several times a year)
Michelin inspectors operate anonymously and evaluate restaurants independently. Fun fact: They’re already out and about, making reservations and searching for culinary gems.
Charleston is undeniably a food lover’s paradise. If you had the power to choose...

What do the Holy City + Spoleto, Italy have in common? The two might seem completely unrelated, but they are actually sister cities.
With the Spoleto Festival just around the corner, let’s take a closer look at Charleston’s special connection to this Italian city. Psst: Stay tuned — we’ll be sharing a conversation with Mena Mark Hanna, General Director and CEO of Spoleto Festival USA, soon.
The goal of a sister city is to cultivate international relationships while having the opportunity to explore different cultures + stimulate economic development. Spoleto became Charleton’s sister city in 2008 + the two cities shares a major festival.
Charleston was selected by founders Gian Carlo Menotti, Christopher Keene + others due to its historic charm, and wealth of theaters, churches + performance spaces. They believed Charleston embodied the spirit of Spoleto, making it the perfect American home for the festival.
