Meet the Holy City’s oldest businesses
To this day, the store is still run by the Berlin family. | Photo by Holy_city_lights
From apparel to pharmaceuticals, the Holy City has multiple family-owned businesses that have been around for more than a century. We’re excited to highlight a few.
Brief history: The clothing store, opened at the corner of King and Broad streets on Sept. 20, 1883, was founded by Henry Berlin, who came to the US from Eastern Europe with $1.38 in his pocket.
Brief history: William Joseph Croghan, a jeweler and engraver, opened his business on the porch of a Charleston home on King Street. Eventually, he expanded to take over the entire building. It is the oldest family-owned jewelry store in Charleston.

The SC Department of Natural Resources has documented the first shorebird nest of the season. An American oystercatchers egg was spotted at Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary in the Charleston Harbor. ⛳️ It’s a tradition like no other
Simple and southern, that’s the theme of our CHStoday menu. | Photo provided by @magnoliaschs via @andrewcebulka
Every April, the world’s best golfers travel to a small city filled with blossoming azaleas just across the SC border. Augusta is nestled in the Georgia pines and is home to the Masters, one of the most famous golf tournaments in the world.
Another great and tasty tradition of the Masters takes place on Tuesday night of tournament week — the Champions Dinner. Here’s a peek at this year’s menu and the menus from the past.
Inspired by this fun tradition and our foodie city, we got to thinking… What if the CHStoday team had the chance to create the menu? Here’s what we’d serve.
Appetizers
Fried okra basket | We’d start with sliced okra served with buttermilk ranch from Page’s Okra Grill.
First course
Hush Puppies | Not just any hush puppies — we’ve chosen the ones from Fleet Landing — stuffed with lobster, shrimp, leeks, and corn over Creole tomato sauce.
🦀 The results are in, and nearly 60% of our readers are fans of soft-shell crabs. If you haven’t tried this seasonal delicacy — what are you waiting for? Tap here for seven spots to give the softies a try.
