In honor of our inaugural Peach Week, we’re taking a look at a battle that pits one state against another: Georgia, “The Peach State,” vs. South Carolina, “The Tastier Peach State.” Let’s take a look at why we think SC peaches come out on top in this so-called “Peach War.”

Battle one | The numbers

South Carolina
  • Production: 84,630 tons
  • Harvested acres: 15,800
  • Yield: 5.8 tons per acre
Georgia
  • Production: 34,340 tons
  • Harvested acres: 7,600
  • Yield: 4.9 tons per acre
Battle one winner: South Carolina — we’re the largest peach producer east of the Mississippi. Take that.

Battle two | The history

  • Mid-1700s: The Cherokee Nation grew peaches in this region.
  • Late 1850s: Commercial shipping out of the region began.
  • 1935: There were 233 packing houses and three million+ peach trees in Spartanburg County alone.
  • 1984: South Carolina adopted the peach as its state fruit.
  • 1995: Georgia adopted the peach as its state fruit.
Battle two winner: South Carolina — we declared the peach as our state fruit first. Checkmate.
Battle three: The taste

Lace up those hiking shoes, Charleston. The South Carolina 7 (SC7) expedition team is hosting a series of fun and meaningful adventures this July — and you’re invited.

On Thursday, July 24 at 9 a.m., join the SC7 team and Mayor Will Haynie at Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park for a 6-mile hike showcasing the Lowcountry’s natural beauty.

The group will walk across the iconic Ravenel Bridge, take a break at the top to enjoy the stunning views, then head back to the park. Along the way, a hydrologist from the SC Department of Natural Resources will share fun facts about the Cooper River and why it plays an important role in our environment.

This event is a great chance to get outdoors, connect with the community, and learn about conservation, sustainability, and the benefits of spending time in nature.

Pro tip: Bring water + sunscreen.
See you on the trail

The Wrap

🪏 The Charleston International Airport is preparing to soar to new heights. The airport broke ground on a $105 million gate expansion, to allow the airport to accommodate more travelers + double the international destinations it offers.
Three white hard hats labeled “CHS” are perched on wooden-handled shovels at a construction site. The scene overlooks an airport runway under a sunny sky with scattered clouds and construction equipment.
