News Notes

Civic

Out with the old. Charleston’s annual Operation Move-Out starts today, July 31, through Tuesday, Aug. 5, to manage move-out clutter from college students leaving off-campus rentals. Stack large items neatly at the curb, but don’t leave electronics — those should go to a drop-off site.

Develpoment

A new retail development is proposed for an area off North Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant, just across from the Lowe’s. Plans call for 20,000+ sqft of retail space, 6,000 sqft for restaurants, and a 155-space parking lot. (WCSC)

Community

Are you an entrepreneur who lives and works in the Tri-county? You have until Tuesday, Sept. 30, to apply to join a pitch competition hosted by Beemok, where up to $1 million will be awarded to an early-stage company. The live pitch event will be open to the public on Saturday, Nov. 8, with investor networking.

Edu

A new partnership between Trident Tech and the College of Charleston hopes to expand education opportunities. Students who complete an associate’s degree in certain fields at Trident Tech can gain reduced admission to the College of Charleston’s online Bachelor of Professional Studies program — expediting the pathway to a four-year degree. (WCBD)

Biz

Next Friday, Aug. 8, the City of Charleston and the US Small Business Administration are inviting local entrepreneurs and small business owners to attend a free Lender Matchmaking event to explore funding solutions. Register and head to Bastin Hall at The Citadel from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

State

Say goodbye to the old driver’s license design — SC’s newest IDs are showing up with a fresh face and state pride to match. The SCDMV unveiled redesigned driver’s licenses and ID cards featuring yellow jessamine, a Carolina wren, a loggerhead sea turtle, the State House, and more iconic Palmetto State imagery.

Casue

The seventh annual Braggin’ Rights culinary competition returns on Tuesday, August 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. Chefs and mixologists from all 10 Hall Management Group locations will compete for bragging rights, while raising funds for Trident Tech’s Bill Hall Culinary Entrepreneurship Endowed Scholarship. Tickets are $200.

Choosing a pest control provider? Ask these questions first.

When it comes to keeping your home pest-free, not all plans (or providers) are created equal.

Walker Pest Management breaks down what to look for before you sign a contract:

What’s actually included?

Many providers leave out:

Is it really cheaper?

Budget plans often cost more long-term when issues aren’t handled correctly.

Do they do more than just spray?

A true pro starts with:
  • Thorough evaluation
  • Root-cause identification
  • A sustainable, integrated pest management (IPM) plan

Are they licensed, insured, and well-reviewed?

Don’t skip the research — your home’s safety depends on it.

Bottom line: Knowing what’s covered is everything. Ask the right questions so you can live your best pest-free life.

Carolina Chickadees, Carolina Wrens, Northern Cardinals, and Mourning Doves are all commonly spotted in the Charleston area.

While we see lots of water birds here in the Lowcountry, the Carolina Wren is actually the state bird of South Carolina.
