Post by @scdnr

For the first time in nearly a decade, brown pelicans are nesting on Crab Bank. To protect the baby chicks, SCDNR is extending the seasonal closure on part of the island.

On Thursday, Oct. 16, the western end of the island will reopen for public access, while the eastern end will stay closed through Saturday, Nov. 15.

Did you know? Between the 1990s and the mid-2000s, the island supported 10-20% of seabird nesting in the state.
