Kultura is making room for more guests at a larger restaurant space in downtown Charleston

The acclaimed Filipino restaurant, Kultura, will expand its operations to a larger space on Rutledge Avenue, just a few blocks away from its original Spring Street spot.

Acclaimed Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood Filipino restaurant Kultura, led by James Beard-nominated Chef Nikko Cagalanan, is growing — and not just in popularity. The petite 760-sqft Spring Street location is expanding to a larger space just a few blocks away at 267 Rutledge Ave.

A corner building with pale doors and frosted windows sits in soft sunlight. A chalkboard sign outside reads “Happy 2 years Kultura,” while nearby street signs and trees frame the quiet sidewalk.

“Kultura is more than a restaurant to me — it’s a way to share my culture, my story, and the warmth of Filipino hospitality,” said Cagalanan in a press release.

An overhead spread features golden lumpia, savory meatballs, colorful fried shrimp chips, and tropical flowers on banana leaves. Two small candles glow warmly, enhancing the vibrant, festive, and inviting presentation.

Did you know the restaurant started as a pop-up? Chef Nikko first introduced his culinary vision to the Holy City through his pop-up, Mansueta’s Filipino Food. The success of that project led to the opening of Kultura in 2023.

Kultura’s beverage director, Jessica Ford, is excited to introduce a full range of spirited drinks and non-alcoholic options.

The new space will offer a larger kitchen, expanded dining room, and a full bar, which will allow the beverage director, Jessica Ford, to introduce a revamped drinks and mocktail menu.

The original location at 73 Spring St. will remain open until the transition is complete, and the grand opening of its new home at 267 Rutledge Ave. will take place on Friday, Oct. 24.
