We’ve all heard about (or fallen victim to) the pickleball craze — us included. But there’s a new sport in town, and LTP Daniel Island is leading the charge.
Meet padel: a lively mix of tennis and squash that’s as fun as it is addictive. Earlier this month, LTP Daniel Island officially launched the Lowcountry’s first padel membership, giving players exclusive perks and access to the new courts.
Founding memberships start at $55/month (with a one-year commitment) with a $249 initiation fee. Pro tip: This fee is waived for the first 20 members.
Own a piece of Charleston history — the Humphrey Sommers House (c. 1778) is for sale. The 5,197-sqft home is just steps from restaurants, galleries, and the waterfront (major bonus: the home sits on high ground in the X flood zone). We love the spacious primary suite’s fireplace, walk-in closet, and spa-like bath.
Develpoment
The Magnolia Landing development recently had its first concrete pour on the site and is now looking to enhance its roadside profile. Developers are looking to install a temporary oversized sign made of three 40-ft-long shipping containers. The sign was approved as long as it’s within two years, or no later than Dec. 31, 2027. Community
The Lowcountry Literacy Project has announced a new funding partnership with Boeing. The aerospace company’s investment will directly support the expansion of the Orton-Gillingham model at St. Andrew’s School of Math and Science, Matilda Dunston Elementary, and Ladson Elementary — impacting 31 new teachers and hundreds of students.
Festival
The 42nd annual Lowcountry Oyster Festival returns to Boone Hall on Sunday, Feb. 1. Those who buy tickets to the world’s largest oyster festival can enjoy over 45,000 pounds of steamed oysters, oyster shucking and eating contests, drinks, live music, and a children’s area.
Cause
This month, Trident United Way is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of its Days of Caring. This year, the multi-day event will run from Wednesday, Nov. 19, to Friday, Nov. 21, and aims to bring hundreds of nonprofit agencies and thousands of volunteers together for three days to improve our community.
Environment
Scientists have uncovered dozens of new aquatic species in the Southern Ocean, including a carnivorous “death ball” sponge that uses tiny hooks to capture its prey. You don’t need to travel that far to see local wildlife for yourself — The SC Aquarium is full of wonder. (ABC News)
